Air Tool Oil ? is it necessary?

If you really have a first class dehumidifier to take 100% of the water out of your air compressor, you can prolly use the cheapest sludge you can get to lube your air tools, but if you've got water dripping out of your air tools, you'll probably want to get the best air tool oil money can buy.

There's another thing I learned when I was repairing air tools. Most folks give their air tool a few drops of oil before using the tool, and that's good, but you should also give it a few drops AFTER you use it, then one very short blast of air to distribute the oil displace any moisture. Another question I was frequently asked was about using too much oil. Three or four drops is generally plenty, but the only thing that happens when you use "too much" is that you blow oil out of the tool onto whatever you're working on. You will not hurt the tool with too much oil because all the excess will simply be blown out the exhaust.

Yes I do that Bird. also you don't know if the next person to use it will oil it up, so you need to pre oil it for them. A friend had been using my impact in my shop, he compalined that the trigger was sticking on. He had been using it most of the day. I aksed him if he ad oiled it and got a look that said "of course not". Actually he is a cousin of the wife, so I can't run him off.
Oiled it up and it was fine...
I also have a good air dryer so no moisture.

Back when I ran a service truck for the rental/equipment co., I had the small automatic oilers installed on all my air tools. They worked great. They had see through oil reservoirs, and you just filled up when they got low. Every time you pulled the trigger, it would get a steady supply of oil.

You can buy them most places. I think TSC even has them in their air tool section.

One thing I might add, read the max pressure allowable on the instructions. These are made from some type plastic, and too much air pressure will make them crack. Check them periodically for cracks (more so if they are bouncing around in a tool box on a truck) because if they are leaking they leave an oily spot.
