I acquired a used Alamo Flail Mower this past winter and so far it has been great...that is until I went to adjust the mower height.

When I loosened the rear roller brackets to adjust the height I found that the left side end cap of the roller popped loose. I placed this cap with a hex shaft back inside the roller and tightened everything back up at the correct height. Today I went to mow and after about 15 minutes I realized something was up because one side was digging a bit.

Unfortunately it came apart again and pretty much trashed that side of the roller.

I am pretty sure I have a SHD 88 mower but it does not have a serial number. (It was a surplus municipal mower). Since these are relatively common mowers can somebody in the know tell me if these rollers are meant to be held together just by the frame of the mower...or if there was a press fit on these parts that gradually came loose? Can I hurt anything by reinstalling the roller and welding the cap to the roller? I do not see how this would hurt anything but want to confirm. My interpretation at the parts diagram suggests the roller is sold in one piece with the cap on both ends.

The end cap bearings feel smooth but do have some play. I am not sure if this is normal or if this contributed to the one end cap being able to move relative to the rest of the roller.

That doesn't look like a difficult repair. That roller turns pretty slow, so balance is not an issue. Any local welding shop can make that like new again. I could do it if you lived near me. Perhaps someone on here is local enough to help. Shouldn't cost more than a twelve pack

Yes, they are held in by the frame, and very simple in design.

They take a pounding though, and despite daily greasing, I go through my share of roller bearings. Last year I went through (3) roller bearings, and (2) sets of drum bearings.

When I read your post I was like, "Yep, mine did that same thing last year."

BTW: If you are running Y-Blades on yours, you can resharpen them. I can get about (4) sharpening's on my blades before they are toast. I know they are only $1 a blade, but still, sharpening versus replacements can save you some money, and yet give you faster mowing speeds.
