All-terrain vehicle SAFETY CERTIFICATE required

Does anyone operate an all-terrain vehicle on public property and know what is involved in obtaining a Safety Certificate?

Wow, that's a new one, DON. Even here on the left coast, we don't have
those....

What's next, roll bars, seat belts, and helmets?

Don, that's clearly in the best interest of all concerned when operating in Texas public areas. It is interesting that those limits apply to only to ATVs and not to UTVs or something considered to be a farm vehicle. The definitions section says the ATV is equiped with a "saddle" and would seem to clearly exclude UTVs and golf carts.

Don't have the answer to your specific question but in British Columbia Canada they are going to require new ATV's and dirt bikes to be licensed. In my opinion long overdue. Almost all are not licensed or insured and it seems that way too many are causing problems. Many of them do not use helmets and speed down roads and highways. They feel they can go anywhere they want. Caught 3 ATV's (5 people 2 chainsaws) making a new path thru our neighbors property. Hate being told to F**K off by trespassing vandals. I also get tired fixing up our private road after they have had their fun doing chewies/doughnuts and digging up the road. I have to get gravel and fill in what they have dug up. They can be heard for miles, somehow they seem to be able to enhance the noise out of the engines, it is very annoying if you are trying to have a quite sit outside. It's too bad they just can't legally, quietly and safely use them.

Jim, thanks for pointing out the "saddle" in the definition. Our local paper had a notice from the police that ATV drivers must have the safety certificate in their possession.

I never heard of it, or where to acquire one, they just referenced the web site. Apparently some kids in town are having too much fun and they are being warned.:D

Sounds like drivers will be required to take an "ATV safety course" of some form. We have boater's safety, snowmobile safety, hunter's safety, etc. anyway.

"Knowing" how to operate safely, and actually doing it are two different things when it comes to ATVs :)

Big Gov't is going to take our hand the day we are born (not before :) ) and walk us through life until we pass on.

But the careless users are the ones that beget the rules to come down from above.

That's true, the bad apples ruin the barrel. We have several ATV fatalities each year in Maine. Usually too fast or not enough experience to know they are going too fast.

Eventually Big Brother will splice the Roundup Ready gene into people before they are born :p, so enjoy that 'not before' while you can. :D

I spoke with "Big Brother". He said the part they are enforcing is that the driver must have a driver's license and be wearing safety equipment - helmet, gloves, goggles if on the road. Big Brother could not tell me where to physically get a safety certificate.

We have had our share of child deaths on ATVs. Kids need big brothers.:(

If you talk to a local sportsmans club, many of them have ATV certification courses..I know mine does. A Saturday afternoon, that's all..Good stuff actually, and I'm a limited gov't type.
