Hi all

This summer I started comming down with a feaver; 102 to high of 103. Feaver came early eve or in middle of nite. Lasted about about 10 hours and I broke out in sweat. I was in business, ready to go, in another 10 hrs. So... family doc says , after 3rd time happened, "go to hospital when fever is up". "That's only way to figure out whats happening."
So I go and spend 5 days in hospital. After CT scans, scopes, x-rays, lab cultures, blood work etc. it's a mystery according to doctors.

Now I'm wondering....has anyone had allergy problems that acted like this??

Hard to narrow down the cause, but typical allergies do not cause fevers.

The list of possibilities would take a very long time to type out. Have you traveled out of the country? Been on any new meds? Are you otherwise healthy? Remember any insect bites? Any skin lesions or rashes? Been checked for tuberculosis? Been around any dead animals (especially rabbits?) or worked for a farm or veterinarian with animals, especially around byproducts of animal birth?

Night sweats and fever can be indicative of more serious things (eg. lymphoma). I would imagine they looked for that during your 5 days in hospital. Keep after it until you can get an answer.

It doesn't sound like allergies. I have pretty bad allergies to pollen, outdoor dust, leaves, and ragweed. One whiff of the stuff and I usually come down with a sinus infection. It'll feel like your head is in a vice, like you can't breath through your nose, and sometimes I get chills, but no fever. I would stick on this though as it does sound a bit more serious. Best of luck to you.

Chills is a short step to fever; at least in my non doctor mind. It's a bear to get old.

By the way I'm posting this subject just as general info to all. I don't need doctor advice as I do trust doctors. However, all suggestions are worth asking doc about.

A friend suggested that I should get a special furnace filter that will filter allergens. One suggestion I will try tonite.

almost definitely not "seasonal allergies" but it could still be an allergic reaction to something. The common reaction that a body has to allergens is to release histamines in a chain reaction, where the histamines cause your body to think it needs to release more. But this is just talking in general. It sounds like you have something specific going on. Fevers usually result from a body trying to fight off an infection (bacterial OR viral). Your temperature rises to help white blood cells defeat the enemy. So if you have a mild fever (102, 103), then let it run it's course - it's helping.

In your case, stay on it. It sounds strange. suspicious. unusual.

A little more info. All through hospital stay had mild cough. Robitussin was the treatment of choice in hospital. Of course they did x-rays. Nothing there. The mild dry cough kept up and became so bad, after being kicked loose from hospital. My belly and side hurt like a broken rib would feel. Family doc gives me antibiotics, thinking the sinus might be infected causing drainage into lungs. Antibiotics because the fevers are still on table, unexplained. I also got a nose spray. Helped some. Cough eased. Then cough came back with vengence on 16th. I was coughing so bad I have shaken my guts to pieces. Back to family doc. He told me I had classic case of dry cough from sinus drainage. Doc gave me prednisone; 8 pills first day, 6 second day etc untill tomorrow morning; one pill. I started first dose about 5 PM. First day one must take 8 pills no matter how late one starts. Wow!! By morning cough was mostly gone. Today is 19th and I'm almost cough free. If I go outdoors I get a very slight cough. I wonder after Prednisone is gone, will cough come back.

I saw an ear, nose and throat (ENT) guy Friday. He wants x-ray of head sinus. ENT also suggested a camera looking into lungs might be next if x-ray of sinus shows nothing.

For now no fevers and cough is gone. Sometime one forgets how important health is. By the way, I am not complaining about my short hospital stay. I'm actually gratefull for mostly minor bumps in road. We all see so much pain around us. Sad stories of kids and folks from all ages. So many of the kids are are brave and in good spirit, in spite of their pain. We adults could learn a lot from them. A few days in hospital every so often and blood tests is not so bad compared to many others.

Cheers....Coffeeman
