I have a 1948 Allis B that I want to paint but don't know how much I need for a spray gun or how many cans of spray. I also need heat resistant for the engine. I have the machine completely torn down and will paint every part. Anyone out there have an idea of the quantities and the best place to purchase? Can I purchase the color coat, Allis Orange, with undercoat included in the paint or will I need to apply a separate base? As you can tell I'm a real rookie when it comes to paint projects.

You will need to use a separate base coat for under the industrial enamel, they are not made the same as house paint and do not come with a primer in them. You will not need a special grade of paint for the engine, it will take the same paint as the rest, enamel is very good paint, and the only parts that will get hot enough to damage it will not be painted anyway (the exhaust).

I can not help you with sources for Persian Orange paint as the last B I saw painted, with a brush in the driveway, was purchased direct from the Allis dealer in the town I grew up in...about 45 years ago. They also had the decals, we made Dad buy them. It may not have been show quality, but it held up fine except for where our boots scuffed it all off on the top of the drawbar, transmission, and pedals.

Tractor Parts Restoration Supply Antique Tractor Parts - John Deere Farmall Allis Chalmers (Restoration Supply) has B parts, though I've only gotten a muffler and radiator hoses from them. There may be better places out there.

I would look at Tractor Supply for the paint. They have a lot of factory colors ready to go.

Wow that was a quick reply. Thanks a million for the info. Any idea how much paint I would need?

A B is pretty small but I would get a gallon. You may need more than two quarts and the gallon will probably be cheaper.

Okay Guys, I thank you for the advise so now I'm ready to paint and assemble. As usual this site is the best for getting solid, sane advise.
