Ok, I have just under 3 acres, split up with pastures for my sheep. have 700ft drivway to plow in the winter, we built on a hayfield so no trees and get up to 4ft or over drifts. been using my Allis WD with front end loader, however that can get stuck easily as it is a narrow front. Would a compact 4x4 be better for my use? I also have a Wheel Horse for tilling the garden. My mower deck is getting bad, but have a decent riding mower so do not really need the deck, as I like the 42 inch better.

Would the compact tractor be a better fit for me, as I can then use it to till my garden along with getting in my gates better to scoop the sheep hay out.

right now all I use the Allis for is snow removal as its kind of big to get around my yard. ( I do like driving it though, really fun tractor).

thank You

dave

Welcome to the forum! If I were you, I'd get a 4x4 compact tractor in the 30hp range with a front end loader (FEL) probably with a hydrostatic transmission (HST) for ease of use since you probably aren't going to be doing any tillage to speak of other than a rear mounted tiller. Although the Allis is a fine tractor, it's still 70 year old technology and really isn't suited for hobby farming, using around the house and garden and other such chores. Keep the Allis for recreational use or to restore if you're into stuff like that.

There is a saying on the forum that goes like this: "Weight gets the work done, horsepower gets the work done faster". Keep that in mind when choosing a tractor. Test drive as many as you can and compare features and how the tractor fits you. Keep long term costs in mind as some tractors have a Diesel Particulate Filter which will need maintenance sooner or later in its life, some tractors don't use them at all. Newer tractors that have the Tier IV emissions have more computer controls for the engine/powertrain like modern cars. The older ones don't.

Have fun deciding and enjoy the ride!!

I have a NH TC33D and the neighbor has a WD he uses to bale hay. If I was going to spend a day in the field going back and forth thumping away with the baler, the WD works great. You can set the rpm, gear, and use the hand clutch when needed (thick hay). If you want something that will easily do most any job....the HST compact sure does it. One finger steering and so easy the wife can drive it.
