I did something really stupid today . I was brush hogging my field and not paying close enough attention to my gages especially my water temp gage.
I had been mowing for about 3.5 hours while checking my gages periodically but not paying close attention.I noticed that my water temp was just shy of going into the red. I switched of my pto and dropped my engine down to an idle immediately. I wondered what would cause this. I got off my tractor and went around to the front. I noticed right away that
my radiator shroud was full of goldenrod dust. I immediately cleaned it out. The water temp started to drop gradually. I let the motor run at idle & let the water temp get back to normal for about 20 minutes before I shut it down.Even though the motor did not over heat I am somewhat concerned because it only has 112 hours on it.
Next time I will pay a lot closer attention.

Charlie, you need to clean the screen in front of the radiator as well as the radiator itself, and the outside grilles.
I do this every time before or after using the tractor as it take very little time to clog everything up in things like cat tails, dog fennel and goldenrod.
I doubt you did any damage, but it's a good idea to stop as soon as you notice a lot of crap in the holes of the grilles.
You can use low-pressure air to clean the radiator being very careful not to hit the fragile fins. Too high air pressure can bend those fins, but the radiator needs regular cleaning or it will be harder to clean out as debris gets pushed into the fins over time. John

I eliminated THAT particular problem by getting some nylon screen material and making a front end cover to keep the stuff on thwe outside of the tractor. I use bungee straps etc to hold it on. Make sure that the open under side in front of the radiator is covered too. I can now do my whole day of hogging without gettin "warm ". of course I have a cab... one can take that last comment 2 ways /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The goldenrod around here is just starting to bloom, however the worst to watch out here are the dog-fennel kooties, they will block a radiator in a heartbeat.
