Almost bought the farm: Need info on flood detection/power interrupt for well pump

I thought the issue was the proximity of the panel box breaker to the spraying water. Even I won't grab an energized twist-lock plug to disable the pump that is soaking both me and the wall socket. I'm not the most cautious person, but I'm not "stipid"! ;-

If water is spraying all over the place, best to put a whole-house disconnect under the meter outside. Kill the house power before handling anything.

Strange

My "whole house disconnect under the meter outside" requires tools and a 150 foot hike to the shop to get to. I might not be well suited to do all that efficiently, after falling off a ladder. ;-)

The PVC setup made it 25 years before something broke, and it took my 200lbs stepping directly on it, right at the fitting. Not sure even a copper fitting would have survived the physics of that circumstance. The way it's plumbed, near the floor, it really needs a physical barrier to protect it, and now it has one. Funny thing is, with the work I'm doing in the basement (converting it to a workshop for the wife's craft biz), I already foresaw the need for that kickplate, to protect it from her. Didn't occur to me I would have to protect those pipes from me while I was doing the conversion work.

Life lessons.

I plumbed the entire house and all the ooutside hydrants with pvc bacl in the 80s. I have had one fitting break, an awkward 45 degree elbow setup to raise the pipe to match the pipe into the basement. Broke due to the gound settling on it after some 30-40 years. Also had one leak due to stupitidyh. I used a female pvc onto a male iron (standpipe). Cracked the fitting on the cast line not even a month after install. Always with plastic make it a PVC male IPS fitting into a female iron.

When I installed a new breaker panel in my house, I put a disconnect under my meter (the disconnect becomes the main panel), so I could kill the entire property at one place, and work in the main panel (which is now a sub panel) without fear of death. No tools required to open the disconnect box and kill power.
