The noise cancelling headphones thing is an interesting one.
While they reduce the situational awareness, they also might mean you can still hear things when you're older. I split the difference by using "ballistic" ear defenders: they simply damp out noises that would be damaging to your ears, and can actually amplify background noises. I've been surprised on calm days by hearing rustling noises in the grass that I'd have never heard without them.

Can plug an MP3 player into them too.. and still hear everything going on in the outside in perfect stereo.
