Is it possible you have the wrong alternator?

You need to take old unit and get an exact replacement.

Just about any alternator can be made to work. The variations are primarily the mounting but subtle mods to the wiring may be necessary. What we need to help is more info on the alternator you're trying to use. What make and what are the terminals? A photo would help.

Why mess around when an exact replacement is easy to do.

We'd need to know what alternator you are trying to use to tell you how to wire it to make it charge.
