I'll have to call Monday and see how much and if available.

But If its way high, I'm thinking about plumbing a hydr. motor to spin a chev. alternator and rewire it.

Probably why the electrical sys. is junk on the Pt anyway, I don't think the Duetz alternator can handle the electrical system.

Has anyone had any problems with the alternator on yours?

I have not had any problem with the alternator on my 1845. I use both an electric sprayer and electric spreader from time to time and the 40 amp alternator seems to have plenty of power for them plus keeping the battery charged.

Have you considered the alternative of having the alternator rebuilt? I would think that would be much preferable to having to fabricate an alternative system to drive another alternator.

I haven't had any alternator or charging problems on my 1845.
What were the symptoms and observations of your failure?

Could you just mount a different alternator in the same locatiion as the Deutz? Having to use a hydraulic drive sounds expensive and ties up your PTO full time or affects the other hydraulics. I think it is best to have repaired what you have.

Hi: I killed the regulator on my 1430 by forgetting to move the welding ground when moving front to back - had the battery disconnected but needed to take the wires off the alternator, I guess. Too many paths for the welding current. I found a regulator was $125 and a new alternator was $350. The internal regulator holds the brushes and comes out very easily. Alternator would be a bear. After some time spent recharging the battery nights, I did a little research and found that folks with older sports cars with Valeo alternators found that a Ford regulator works fine. I took the regulator chip out of the Valeo regulator, rendering it just a brush holder. One brush gets grounded, and the other goes to the ford regulator which also gets tied to the b+ (battery) and to the "ignition" circuit. Cost for the Ford regulator and a wiring harness connector at CarQuest was about $25. It works just fine (after about 50 hours). All this assumes the regulator is the problem - wiring in the alternator is pretty heavy. Diode assembly could also be the problem, but that could be replaced by a rebuild shop.

If you are interested I can give you details about which brush to ground and the exact wiring and parts I used. I mounted the regulator above the draft control and ran wires in a loom back to the engine.

Thanks guys. I ordered a voltage regulator kit ($141.43) I really hope that will fix it.

When it quit, the machine was being used to push brush, it was raining....the lights were on. No other electrical accesories have been added.

I would check the voltage coming from the alternator before hooking up the regulator. Most places will not take back electrical parts. Good luck.

I think you really need some local help diagnosing this problem. I had my 422 shutdown and then run erratically and it was the fuse holder. This may not be your problem, it's just an example. If your battery is still charged and will turnover the engine then I doubt very much that the shutdown is caused by the alternator. If you view it from the battery's perspective, then the purpose of the alternator is to keep the battery charged. That is it. If the battery stays charged during use then the alternator is OK. Can you still crank the engine after shutdown? It sound like you can from your description. This sounds more like an erratic connection. Do you have the schematic to the machine? If so I might be able to help. I live in Powhatan Va. and have some electrical knowledge, but I must have a schematic. I may be able to give some advice and even come and visit. We have got to get these problems solved so you start loving this machine.

When what quit? The engine? The alternator? The lights? To run, the engine only requires power to energize the fuel control solenoid. My 1845 died one day and it turned out to be a bad fuel solenoid (you don't want to know what THAT puppy costs!) but it could just as easily have been a loose wire or corroded contact.

Thanks all. I think its the alternator/generator because the amp gauge is showing discharge while running.

It will pop the circuit breaker and the engine shuts down, seems to do it immediately when the lights (or any elec. circuit is turned on).

The Duetz dealer sent the wrong part, so now I'll have to wait until next wednesday. We're going to try to get it to run by bypassing the generator tomorrow...I've got to have the machine next week for a job, or the job will run over, and I'll have employees standing around.

At around 350 hours the PT is soo unreliable, I can't ever count on having it for a job. Most skid steers are good up to 3000 hours. Even lawn mowers will last up to 2000 hours.

I regret buying it more than anything else I've ever owned. I'm actually seriously considering going way deeper in debt and buying a Bobcat 300A (all wheel steer).
