Alternator on 1601 bad

Has anyone out there ever tried to rebuild this alternator? Or putting on a different alternator. On this model tractor. I thought a Datsun (70-73) 510 might work. I thought I might get lucky. No way that alternator was going to work. I read another post where someone did that on their tractor. But their tractor was a different model.

Is the bearing bad on your alternator? Otherwise they are almost bulletproof.

I don't think the bearing is bad. Although the pully spins rather strange. It's like the shaft has a flat spot or two or three,etc. And there is a spring pin (or something) hitting the round then the flat, round then flat. Hope this makes sense. Best way I know how to describe the way the pulley turns. Mike

That actually sounds normal with the alternator. You can test it easily. Just connect an AC voltage meter to the 2 blue wires that come out of the alternator. With the tractor running at 1500rpm you should read around 25volts. By the way, Why do you think your alternator is bad?

I have already checked it with a voltage meter. It won't even give a reading. Mike

I might be wrong, but I thought that U needed input to excite the circuit.

Are you sure that the meter was set to AC (like a house) and not DC (like a typical automobile)? That is a very common mistake. The rough turning is due to the fixed magnet design which is also what makes the thing so durable. I have yet to see one that didn't charge if it was turning. No input needed on that style. Just put the tester on the two wires coming out of it.

Aaron, I did have the meter set on DC. I set it on AC and the alt is working. I suppose the regulator is bad. I have had to charge the battery a few times this past year. Mike
