Started cutting and splitting this season's firewood today. Dang ..it's hard work...took lots of watermelon breaks...

It's good work though...

Hydraulic splitter? I used to do it with sledge hammer and wedges ... now that was work. Gave up on firewood 6 years ago after a chimney fire that removed 1/2 of the house roof.

it's the ones that don't split with the first blow or two that get to me...

Those are the ones I just push over, and use the chainsaw to cut through them. :D

But admit that I use the splitter for all the 6-8 cords of firewood now. Have for the last 25 years. Chainsaw those that are too big to lift to the splitter.

If I needed 6-8 cords I'd probably use a splitter too but I'm only looking at two cords max. I've always used a maul and sledge and my now 33 yo Skil Saw. It'll be done by next weekend is my guess.

I'm into a pile of ash right now which is splitting nice. There was a maple crotch that needed some extri persuasion though.

I know one thing...I'll sleep good.

I cut with chainsaw, loaded, hauled home and unloaded a cord last Saturday.
On Sunday I split it with a hydraulic splitter and stacked it.
I could hardly move on Monday!

Today I split and stacked another cord. I can move.

Monday I will go and cut, load, haul home and unload another cord. I won't be moving too fast on Tuesday. :p

I find that cutting, loading and unloading is much harder than splitting and stacking. Probably because the pieces are smaller.

I burned 5-6 cords last year and only have 3 right now. YIKES!

Got around 5-6 cord of Black Locust to be split and another 4-5 to cut and haul. all that to be added to 40+ cords already in the stacks. It is all my "retirement" wood for when I get too stove up to cut anymore (75 now). I will be splitting/stacking most of the winter weather permitting by hand. I only use the hydraulic splitter for the tough stuff. My "wooding" is what keeps me going, were I to quit, I'd either weigh a ton or be dead shortly.

I've gone back to more manual work to stay limber and fit, lot cheaper than going to gym.

Well....if you haven't already done so then ...to your bucket list ... add ... "must update cord wood count in last will"....JK.. :D

I've been working with a semi retired lumber jack up at the Maine house. Last year he put the septic in by himself. The year before that he graded and filled in the driveway. Last month we worked together putting in the water line from the well to the house. In and out of the trench he was with a shovel and pick making things just so for the new pipe.

Doug is 80 or 81 now....he owns an old backhoe and dump. He's got diabetes, he's compact and there's not allot of fat on him. Erma must take good care of him.
