Since a few of you did such a nice job of talking me into a sprayer, I thought I'd tell you about my next interest, one of those ATV mounted spreaders. This unit is not a must, just a want. Instead of having to tow the tractor all over when fertilizer needs to applied to food plots etc., it sure would be nice to just hook up to the 4-wheeler and go. At least this is what I keep telling myself. So what do you think about them? I've seen some small ones for about $100 that could handle one 40-50lb sack of material at a time, and the TSC has one in the catalogue that is rated at 15 gallons. At that size it should easily be able to take two at a tiime. It's something like $270. So if you have one, tell me what you like, dislike? Thanks.

I've got a moultrie one it's great for seed and pellet fertilizer won't work with bulk dolimite lime though. i bought mine from walmart at the end of hunting season for $50. I use it on my lawn and when doing foodplots/gardens even when I have a tractor as I can drive around fast making several passes and get it more even than useing a tractor one. I've got a 3pt spreader but had'nt bothered to buy a new shaft as this works so well.
Thanks, I didn't even consider Walmart. Today I did pick up a Plantmates cloth, shoulder spreader as I'm planning to broadcast clover and turnips this fall. Still looking at those atv spreaders though. Will probably pick up one when I get closer to needing it.

I tried a couple of different tow behind atv spreaders and my ground was too rough and steep for them to maintain a steady enough speed for them to operate properly. Then again I was using the gear driven models. Ended up getting uneven spread, broken axle on one, having to load hopper too often due to limited capacity, and dealing with how to carry the material I need to load into hopper.
I decided to save my money and will eventually go with a 3PH mount for my tractor, as I ended up spreading 2600lbs of lime by hand after wasting alot of time trying to make the atv spreaders work.

I've seen the spreaders you are talking about. The tow behind atv spreaders I've seen are as expensive as those made for the 3pt hitch. Here I'm speaking of the big boys sold at TSC. They also have some that are quite a bit smaller, more like what you would see being pushed by lawn care workers. I could see how they would not hold up in the field. Here I was more interested in those that are mounted on and electrically powered by the atv. I think such an addition might be nice to quickly broadcast a few hundred pounds of nitrogen or even the seed on a food plot. Just something else to play with. As for broadcasting the tonage you mentioned, I usually just have a commercial spreader loaded at the local fert/feed and seed. Mine does not charge for it since you are buying the material. But the 3pt would be the way to go if land is very uneven.
