Tractor
JD318, Power-Trac PT425 with scuffed-up green paint.
Hi guys,

At our home, we've been parking one of the cars outside since I own a PT425 and a JD318, with the JD318 parked in the garage. Frankly, I think cars tolerate being outside a lot more than tractors do.

Well, I got to thinking that since the PT is so nimble and maneuverable, and with the quick-attach on the front, I might be able to fit EVERYTHING down in our basement. Well, suffice to say, it FITS! By taking advantage of the articulation, and the fact that you can quickly move implements around using the quick-attach, I was able to stack all the stuff down in the basement, where I make a sharp left turn using the PT and then just start piling up everything on the cement floor.

With any other tractor, this would be impossible, because a normal tractor of this size and capability needs a lot more room, and cannot turn in such a small area, and the attachments can't be simply moved around and attached/removed/reattached so easily. I am quite pleased with myself, and my wife was quite surprised it all fit!

Note in the attachment that in order to fit into the basement, it is necessary for the tractor to make a sharp left turn - I don't think any other tractor of this capability can make that turn and thus, nothing else will fit! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Nothing earth-shattering, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of this...

Sincerely,

Rob /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So did you come through that double door in the back of the photo?!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also, if you want a few more inches of space, just release the quick attach from the mower, lift it up over the mower, and pull forward a few more inches. Then lower it down and hit float before you shut it off. That's what I did to gain enough room to walk between my PT and the shed doors.

They really are super maneuverable.

So have you been paying attention to the 318 since the PT arrived? Don't let it feel neglected. My little Simplicity was looking kind of sad, so I made it feel important. It is now reserved for the most important jobs(see attached).

Rou ob,
How you keep your 425 so clean? After 4 hours of digging, mine is brown instead of green.

Hi PJ,

I love keeping the PT clean!

1) Pressure washer
2) Garden Hose
3) Dawn Detergent (as needed)
4) Castrol Super Clean (if needed)
5) Leaf blower (to dry, blow off loose dirt and grass, keep water from sitting on steel pieces)

Actually, the PT is usually cleaner than the car.

Sincerely,

Rob /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi David!

Yep, that would be the door! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey, good idea! I remember you mentioning this epiphany in a previous post. I'll give it a whirl.

Boy, I have been SO thankful for the maneuverability so many times. This is perhaps one of the more minor times. I am thankful for it every time I mow, dig, move through garden beds and more. I am also quite thankful for full-time 4WD with big bar tires - it's gotten me out of so many scrapes around the property. Can't imagine being without. Actually, I can, since I've been incredibly stuck with the JD318 a few times. I actually thought about getting a winch for the JD (!) Notice that I have wheel weights on the JD - so it's not an inadequate traction issue on the driven wheels - it's a 'I need a little help with the non-driven wheels, please' problem.

What a great picture - your kids look like they are having a great time. Actually, I did give all a kids a ride around the property this summer, in the cart, filled with water (got the idea from another forum), going REALLY slow.

I would sell the JD - as you can see by the picture, it is in spectacularly-restored condition - it really does look good - and every little thing that CAN be fixed or adjusted has been. If I can figure out how to use my tow-behind implements (like the aerator, the spreader, the cart, etc.) in an easier manner, and also figure out a bagger solution, then the JD is history. For example, it's really nice when using the spreader to be able to turn the unit on and off during usage.

Hmm. I suppose I could move to all PT implements, like their spreader and aerator, or even rig up my own, but the bagger has me stumped. Has anyone looked at a Trac-Vac conversion? I'm considering something that isn't too large....

Sincerely,

Yeah, the little Simplicity gets used for fertilizer spreader duties, too. Just reach back and flip the lever off or on. Plus, it has something similar to the Power Trac... it oscilates in the middle just like our PTs. No, it is not worn out and flexing on a string of rusty steel /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif... it is designed to do it so you keep all 4 wheels on the ground. The guys at the Simplicity shop told me if the joint ever freezes up, the unit is history because they won't repair them. I showed them... I found a junker just like mine that my brother in law got for a go cart engine. If it ever locks up, I'll just pull out the spare! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had I known about the Power Trac's ability to climb basement stairs, I would have bought one myself! Instead, my not so maneuverable 'Bota is vanquished to the garage. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
