And they will not save you any money. 1500 watts is 1500 watts, you still have to pay for it.

It depends.

When DW wants a fireplace downstairs, on an interior wall no less, and one of the "Amish cabinet electric fireplaces " will satisfy her need for the ambience of a fireplace, $300-500 worth of fancy cabinet just saved $10-20k worth of remodeling and retrofit.

The money saved will buy an awful lot of electricity. Heck, the interest on the money saved will probably buy a year's supply of electricity for the fool thing.

They always claim that you can save hundreds on your heating bill every year as well. As others have mentioned, 1500w of heat is 1500w of heat period. The only exception is a heat pump. They are like a 3:1 @ 30 degrees and drop from there as the temp drops. So @ 30 degrees, 1500w of juice going into a heat pump will net you the equivellent of 4500w of heat.

Don't buy into the false claims about heating the objects and not the air blah blah blah. It is false.

The ONLY way these things (or any portable electric heater) are cheaper than a central HVAC system is if you have a large house and don't use all the rooms in your house. You can dial down the thermostat and only heat the localized area that you are in with a protable heater and maybe save a little, but not hundreds.
