just a little question on the amount of time it takes to brush hog amount of land. I have a tc40 d with a 6' rhino brush hog. The grass is only about 8 to 12 inches tall and not real thick. Mostly weeds. I have done tractor work for years and am very proficient with the usage of a brush hog just never really mowed for anyone but myself and i have tons of trees to go around so i really cant gauge how long it takes to mow a acre or maybe a rough guess of how many acres i can mow a day in a 10 hour day. I have had several phone calls for large tracts that need mowing and i know this isnt the best set up for large amounts of mowing. but it is paid for! and if the mowing works out i will invest in a little larger tractor and batwing. Thanks in advance for any info you can give.

1-2 acres per hour, depending how fast you can cut? Fields vary from 1 to the other, depending on how rough they are. I would not go too fast on a field the first mowing. Don't know what may hidden in there? Ken Sweet

I agree with Ken, a lot depends on how many stops and turns you have to make, especially on how rough the fields are. It takes me about 1-2 hours per acre to mow mine, and I know the fields are clear, just a bit bouncy. I figure on a gallon of fuel per hour, more or less. Add in wear and tear, and how much your time is worth.

Most people won't pay the price I ask, which is fine with me. I have other things I can be doing besides barely breaking even.

One acre an hour minimum and two acres an hour at best. The roughness of the ground will more determine the mowing speed than the ability of the equipment. You can beat yourself to death trying to mow too fast.

To rotary cut an acre, and figuring an average width of the cut with the 6' rotary to be 5.5 ft, you would need to travel at a speed of 1.5 mph to get an acre done. That is about 1/2 the speed of a comfortable walk. So, with turning and not being able to be mowing 100 % of the time (moving across mowed areas), then should easy get the 1 acre per hour as suggested.
I charged $50 an hour a couple years ago, and the guy went ballistic. Thought that was too high. Mowed about 5 acres of horse pasture, trimmed close to his fences, did his waterways, and an acre of steep hillside with brush and another area with very tall weeds. He ranted and raved about how great the job was compared to the previous guy he hired. After he was so shocked by the price I gave him, he whined that the previous guy only charged him $80. Go figure. :D
I ended up lowering the price to $200 and he paid, but wasn't happy, and I've never been asked back :D

I've seen a couple of formula's posted on this forum that were developed either by some state ag dept's or ag type universities. With a 5 ft bushhog, you should be able to average mowing about 1.36 acres per hour, assuming level land with no obstacles to mow around. Of course, uneven land and obstacles will only reduce the amount you can mow per hour. I don't know what a 6ft mower calculates out to, but I would think it would only be a small percentage increase over a 5ft mower.
