All,

I own a SuperWinch 3500 and wish to use it with my BX2200. I'm wondering if the stock alternator will power it. The minimum winch requirements are: 60 amp alternator with a 440 CCA battery.

I think the BX comes with enough battery, but not sure about the alternator. Can anybody tell me what the stock and upgrade alternators generate for amps? I asked the dealer over the phone and I could tell he was guessing....

Thanks,

Jim

What full load amp rating does Superwinch says it draws. My gut feeling is that little 60 amp alternator will not be able to keep up with what it will draw from the battery. A 440 CCA is pretty small. I'd try to get a bigger battery and limit your use of the winch. Your BX wasn't really designed to run a winch. But if you are handy you could always use a GM alternator in place of you stock one. This of course means you'd have to fabricate brackets and make your own wiring harness to go from the alternator to the tractor harness. This is possible just don't know if it's worth the trouble.

The winch you are refering to is an S3500 I believe. These are the amp draw ratings for that winch

0#-30A
1000#-80A
2000#-150A
3000#-228A
3500#267A
As you can see, your alternator requirements are considerably higher than 60A. I believe the largest alt. for your BX is approx 40A. If you kept your pulls short and gave plenty of recharge time you may get away using your described battery but you are really putting a load on the system. On my 4wd truck I have a 12000# warn winch that I run from a 1050A battery and a 105A alternator. With a heavy load it is possible( Done it!!) to smoke the belt right off of the alternator. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Pulls are kept to a minimum and cool off/ recharge breaks are necessary.

Thank you guys. I think the winch should be used for emergencies only....not as a tool with which to remove ancient 800lb blocks of concrete slab in a dairy barn. As always, I appreciate the feedback on TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
