Just had to post some observations and experiences with this oil. 1st let me say I do use this product in my Yanmar tractor. It had 1300 hours on it when I put the cleaner in and then replaced the dino oil with the synthetic. Have 1350 or so hours on it now and no leaks observed.

My turbo ran smoother even though the turbo was too big and surged alot. Surge seemed to be less with the synthetic. Other than that no HUGE differences were noted.

Here is the intresting part. While fabracating flanges and stuff for my new turbo I used some of this oil to lube my drill bits and hole saws. I imedately noticed a HUGE difference between dino and synthetic. Drill cut better, did not need sharpening at all, and synthetic oil did not smoke when I accidentally pushed the drill trigger too hard, and bit went too fast.

Not sure exactly what all this means but there is definately a big difference between synthetic and dino. Since my tractor only takes 6 quarts cost is not that much of an issue so I will keep using it. My powerstroke uses 15 quarts and cost is an issue there and I will keep using dino.

Just some observations I have noticed.

Cheap insurance....I have a Miller Traiblazer (1999 model) that I picked up that only had 11 hours on it...has a 20hp Onan engine (air cooled). As this unit will need to last me my lifetime plus one of my nephew's lifetime, I first changed the oil at 12 hours with dino...ran it till it had about 22hours (to get a good ring seating), then put in 15-40 Amsoil...I've got right at 50 hours on it now and it runs flawlessly. Of course these engines are supposed to run for 4000 hrs anyway, but like I said, I'm looking for 2 or more lifetimes out of it....Its actually the only thing I run the Amsoil in...BobG in VA

I have been useing schaeffers oil (synthetic) supreme 9000 5w40 in my 2004 cummins diesel, great oil IMHO.I have done some research on this site Bob Is The Oil Guy I plan on useing the schaeffers in my kubota ZTR and Kubota RTV 900 after some break in time.coobie

I have read and been told that rings and breakin is just as good with synthetic as with dino. Case in point; most cadillac's and the Corvettes come from factory with synthetic in them.

Corvettes and Porches come from the factory with Mobil 1....still doesn't mean the engines weren't "run in" at the factory. Most non high performance car engines aren't run in like these. Tractor engines/diesels need to have the rings seated well during breakin as excessive oil usage can occur if they are not....Obviously you can start with a synthetic if you want to, but personally, I'll put 5000-6000 miles on a car engine (changing the dino oil every 2000 miles or so) before I'll change to syn. I never would put syn in any of my motorcycles untill I had at least 2500 miles on the engine. Just my way....BobG in VA

Go to Walmart and get Shell Rotella-T synthetic 5W-40 for your diesel truck. It's about $18/gallon*, sold in gallon pails, and has worked great in our 3/4 ton Ram/Cummins and in my CRD Jeep Liberty. It's also going to be going into my JD tractor in the near future. I don't know if it's necessarily as good as Amsoil, but it's readily available at a reasonable cost for a fully-synthetic oil.

*In my area of Michigan, last time I bought it which is several months ago...

The portion in bold, it seems to me, is not a good testimonial to synthetic oil. Ease of metal removal and superior lubrication are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

I hope dieselpower chimes in on this thread; he is very knowledgeable on oils. I beleive he will know if it is feasable to break an engine in on synthetic.

The label on the Redline 10w-30 synthetic (group 5) container states: "Not for break-in of engines - allow 3000 miles". I don't know if that is the recommendation for other synthetic oils. I switched at the 100 hr maintenance.

Most full synthetic engine oils are either a blend of Group 3 (highly refined dino) and 4 (usually PAO base stock) or mainly Group 4(this is the majority of what is in Amsoil). Redline is a little different in that the majority of their blend is Group 5 ester base stock. I normally dont recomend group 5 ester base stock oils for extended use because they tend to leak out due to incompatability with seals, group 3 and 4 does not effect seals like ester group 5 does. Group 5 base stocks engine oils are mainly used in race engine applications, which is what Redline specializes in and the engines are normally torn down every race or two so leaks are not really a concern.

Now, synthetic and engine breakin. A large number of engines are broke in at the fatory. But without being sure if your engine is "pre" broke in it's best to do some form of break in. I have never been one for long term breakin's since the majority of breakin happens within the first couple of minutes. Usually your safe switching to a synthetic after a couple of hours of opertion. The bulk of breakin that will occur will have happened and the switch to synthetic should be fine. I like doing the first oil change very early so I can get the bulk of the the breakin's wear metal out of the engine.
