Anyone that has any doubts about the strength of this stuff needs to have a look at these pics. We're preparing for hurricane Earl's arrival over the next few days, the riggers were placing a concrete sea anchor on one of the jetties to lash a traveling jetty crane in place. The anchor arrived on a flatbed trailer, they used 3/4 or 1 inch Amsteel Blue to lift it with. God alone knows what the anchor weighs, but I can tell you this, it isn't light ! The sling didn't visibly stretch at all under the full weight.

I believe amsteel is based on Spectra Fiber. Breaking strength of 1/4" spectra is 5000#. Extrapolating from that a single 1" rope would do 80,000# ... and twice that [80T] for the loop setup shown. Id say it was in no strain lifting that piece of concrete.

Amsteel Blue is among the "cheapest" synthetic rope for winches, etc. Other brands (that cost 2x+) have even higher strengths, but most importantly (for most) they last longer.

With that said, I have around 150' of Amsteel blue in use at various lengths :D For the price I got them for (end rope on drum) I couldn't pass it up. Also, for the price it was affordable to get a size that worked with my vehicle as well as the ATVs, and other misc duties.

Be sure to get the "Full Tube" thimble on each end so it doesn't easily get crushed when using d-rings.

the rep at bishop mule days said samson has the amsteel in 23/4 inch rated around 900,000 lbs that is pretty strong. i was going to get the 3/8ths to use as a picket line....he said it stretches 1 inch or something per 100 feet

Most of the stuff we use is plain old Samson braid (inner braid as well), at least for mooring lines. I have a couple slings made from that, the splicing process is pretty interesting.

We use the Blue for lifting slings these days, 5 years ago it was more steel cable slings or plain Samson braid.

I have an Amsteel Blue rope on my ATV winch. The OEM aircraft cable that came with my Warn winch frayed and broke in less than a year. I use the winch to raise and lower a snow blade. I have had the Amsteel Blue rope for four years now and it looks like new. It only cost a few dollars more than the OEM aircraft cable that came with the winch.

Chilly,
Good luck with Earl. Hopefully he'll downgrade before you guys get hit.

I've been waiting for my Warn cable to bust but after 2 years of plowing, and numerous recoveries still going strong :D Some day!

FWIW - My Amsteel is 3/8 I believe
