Well it was interesting to me anyway. My tractor has both a primary and a secondary fuel filter. Today I changed both. Dumped the filters and associated fuel in a large can.

I ripped open the filters and could not see anything that was trapped in them. I knew that there was some "stuff" on the bottom of the can and wanted to see what it was.

I stretched double thick pantyhose over another can and poured the contents in so it would strain out the "stuff". This involved approx. half a quart of diesel fuel.

I reached a point at the end of the pour where there was a puddle, (an oz. +-), on the pantyhose, but nothing actually going through. I then realized that what was still unstrained was water. The fuel strained through, and the water did not.

For what it's worth. Hey...I'm easily amused:)

The water has a greater surface tension then the fuel. The same reason you can over fill a glass with water making a dome of water above the rim of the glass.

At least you know your filter's were doing their job.

fuel filters dont strain out water. bad thing!.

but water collects in the bottom of the filters.. good thing!.

thats why we replace the fuel filters or we drain the water/sediment from the bottom of those particular devices.
