I finally decide to get started on my horse barn, I am building a 40 x 60 pole barn that will have 4 stalls for the horses, a tack room, feed room and a storage area. I got a heck of deal on some 6" x 8" treated post from the local power company. They were 29' long so I cut them in halp and started planting them in the ground. I set them at 12' on center and they are out the I am going 10' high with them

I notched all the post to use a doubled up 2" x 12" for my beam to set my trusses on.

My dad came out to give me hand putting up the beams which I about worked him to death. It is always great when you can spend sometime with dad. The wife ran the tractor while I worked out of the bucket and my dad got to use the ladder. I tried to get him to work out of the bucket but I guess he didn't trust my wife running the tractor.

Well I almost forgot the biggest helpers I have, they seem to be into everything and anything they can get there hands on. They helped me layout the barn a few weeks ago and one was holding the tape for me and other one was playing. I would drive a stake in the ground to give me a location of where to out my batter boards and when I would turn around the stake would be gone. I would find being drug across the pasture by my other daughter. But I wouldn't trade them for the world.

This is where I got to this weekend and I hope to start setting the trusses next weekend if the weather holds out.

Looks like you guys busted your butts and got allot done!!!!

I'm curious as to why you notched the tops for both 2x12's? Are you going to attach purlins to the sides for siding? Will they be notched too, or will you add another purlin onto the side of the 2x12's?

Eddie I notched it for double 2 x 12 due to the trusses that I have so all to weight is sitting on top of the post. I am a contractor here in Florida and everyone that builds them around here just notches them for a single board and then they bolt the second beam on the outside. The trusses I have are vaulted so all the weight will be on the outside 2 x 12 and not the inside. So I notched them for the double beam so the all the weight would not be on the two bolts on each post. The sides will be be open but I will build a header wall down to 8' were my horse stalls will be and I will stud the rooms that I am going to build and they will be hardee board sided . We did not get all this done today I set the post a week ago in concrete and notched the post and set the beams today.

Thanks. I figured it was something like that.

I'm looking forward to following your progress and seeing those trusses.

They came from chicken house that were torn down last year here in my county. They are a full 2x6 truss that are designed for 5' centers but I am scaling them back to 4' centers. Thanks for post Eddie I have had some great reading from all your post and it is a pleasure to have you post on mine.
