While I slept last night a rural church 3/4 of a mile from me was burned down. If I had been outside I could have seen the flames. The church was burglarized Monday night and they had a couple of people checking it out last night. They saw the smoke when they opened the door and two of the pews were on fire. They couldn't save anything. With all the commotion that had to be going on, I didn't find out about it till I drove to the church to take my grandchildren to the 1800's era cemetery about 1/2 a mile behind the church. I was shocked to say the least. The TV truck was still there and the church members were getting ready to have their Wednesday night service so we stayed for that as I really pride myself on the life experiences I provide for my Grandchildren, and they were impressed with that outdoor church service. I had my camera because I had planned on taking some pictures at the cemetery of the old grave stones and huge ceder trees.

Are you suggesting that a person who would do something like this could or would do it without HATE? Good grief think about it.....if a person murders someone, don't you think they hated the person they murdered?? If a person torched a church, don't you think they perhaps had HATE in their hearts before they did the deed.

Hate crimes....good grief. Crimes like this are all hate crimes.

DiDo Warren! It's a blessing that no one was hurt. Even better still a blessing that the members didn't let the loss of the building STOP there Praise and Worship. Even outdoors lets keep doing HIS will.

My Prayers go out to the community as a whole and all that are effected in any way shape or form.

P.S where is this town I'm in the South East near the 3 state lines FL.GA.AL

When I was a Union Steward, we had two instances of members who's cars were vandalized and the N word scratched into the paint. It was pretty bad and within weeks, the lawyers were involved. About a month later, it was found out that they had done it themselves. One was caught on camera doing it, and the other admitted to doing it himself after the person he bragged to about doing it, turned him in.

There was a string of church burnings in the 90's that made the news. It was a pretty big deal at the time, with the usual protesters leading marches and accusations about racism being through about. Then it discovered that the person who was starting the fires was black, and was starting the fires to fake hate crimes, it all disappeared.

The other thought is that it could have be kids, or a kid, playing with matches. We just had a scare at our house. Our 8 year old took the empty popcorn bag and lit it on fire on the kitchen floor. His 11 year old sister was right there, said she was telling him not to do it, but for whatever reason, he lit it on fire and they watched it burn. Fortunately, we have concrete floors and there was no damage. The house just smelled like smoke and they didn't clean up all the ashes.

One of the guys my Dad used to work with at PacBell, who knows electricity and knows better, used black tape to splice together some romex in his wall during a remodel. He was about two feet short on the run, so he twisted the wire together and wrapped it with the tape. As everyone knows, black tape dries out and comes apart. It might take ten years, or it might be just a few years, but it always comes apart. Conditions were perfect for this, and when his house burned down, that's where they determined the fire started. As a Contractor, one of my clients is a fairly large church. They have had members and local handy men working on it for decades. They thought they were saving money by using volunteers or hiring those in need of a buck to get them through a rough time. Unfortunately, most of what was done was either illegal or a band aid type fix. I've had to replace and redo allot of electrical work because of the black tape syndrome. I can't even begin to count how many times I see this. Nobody uses junction boxes for their splices and nobody uses wire nuts. Then there is the interior romex used outside for lighting that's coming apart. In just a couple of years, the outside rubber is cracked and broken off from the elements. And my next project there is to redo the wiring of some tract lights that some members installed without conduit. The scary part is that somebody has already hit and split the wire so that I can see copper on the black wire. I've fixed that, but need to pull it all down and redo it with conduit and junction boxes.

Just last week, a kid was shocked at the church from trying to turn on a light in the gym. The switches need a key to turn them on, but he figured he could stick the tip of a knife in there and get it that way. He might have done this before, or others might have told him that he could do it. Anyway, it's a 20 amp breaker on a 4 pole switch. It shocked him pretty good and blacked the terminals of two wires, plus the back of the cover plate.

If that church is anything like this one, then it could be an electrical fire caused from not doing a repair or improvement properly. Too many fires are caused from shortcuts. It could also be caused from somebody meaning well, but not understanding that sticking metal into an electrical receptical is a bad idea.

It's sad when anything burns down. Sorry to hear about this, but would sure like to hear what the official reason for the fire turns out to be.

Eddie,

We've had a rash of church burnings here in Alabama over the past few years. According to the news reports this one was probably arson.

We had an instance in 2006 where three college students burned several churches. Here is a link to an article : CNN.com - Suspect: Church fires started as 'joke' - Mar 8, 2006

What's ironic is they were caught because one of them had put some custom tires on his truck and the ATF and FBI did a search and found out where/when the tires were bought and by whom. Kinda CSI style.

THere was a few around here in the 90's to My grandmothers church burned down to. The sherrif at the time was more interested in his golf game while investigating. The only evidence left was a gas can on one of the deputys picked it up by the handle, I was cleaning paint off my grandfathers grave and over heard many of the deputies complaining that state line was 1.5 miles away that they could be catching beer instead. Really burnt my feathers.
There was a girl intown and she and her little goth buddies all laughed about it and had bragged on it. While doing so This little meek mild mannered girl I went to school with all my life darted at her like a rocket and punched the dog crap out of her and 2 of her freaky little buddies.

Eddie, you're right about the small churches using the members abilities to do the work. Now they may all be qualified here, but they mentioned at the service that with the members abilities and insurance they had they will be able to rebuild.

The officials investigating haven't drawn conclusions yet but the members believe it was arson but have no theory on the reason. They will have a double wide on the site in a couple of weeks from the Baptist Association in Montgomery.

This church is located 6 miles east of Moundville, Al which is 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa, Al. It's 2 miles west of the oakmullgee(sp?) division of the Talladega national forest.

Whatever the reason it's a plain awful shame. A beautiful heritage part of the community gone. Good to see the diligence of the parishoners carrying on.

Good post Eddie. Very educational.
