From the Brattleboro Refomer, Brattleboro VT, 7-Mar (happened Sunday, apparently);

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( <font color="blue">"HALIFAX -- A 55-year-old Wilmington man was struck and killed by a falling tree during a logging accident on Sunday.
According to Halifax Fire Chief Wayne Courser, Joel Greene was logging alone about a half-mile off Thurber Road when the accident occurred.

Courser said the tree which hit Greene was standing on the edge of a marshy area and appeared to have uprooted a short time after being struck by another tree that Greene had just cut down.

Courser said it appeared Greene was trimming the limbs off the felled tree when he was hit from behind by the toppling tree. Courser said Greene had probably been struck around 2 or 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

Courser said a friend of the family went looking for Greene around 5 p.m. after his wife, Sandra Bolduc, called because Greene hadn't returned home yet. Courser said the Halifax Fire Company responded to a call for help at 6:30 p.m. "

Just another reminder that cutting trees is not just a matter of buying a chainsaw and having fun. The story on the radio broadcast said he was an experienced logger. Prayers for the family...

You can never trust trees. Several years ago I was cutting down a 18" ash that was located right next to a garage. I trimmed off as many branches as I could with an 8 ft stepladder and a pole pruner to make sure all the weight was off the side by the garage. When I started to cut the tree I gave it the proper notch and began the back cut, put a wedge in place and continued the cut. With about a 1.5" hinge I tapped the wedge and the tree began to move. It spun 180 degrees before it fell, knocking me down as it went. I rolled as far as I could and the trunk missed me by less than 8 inches. I thing I layed there for about 20 minutes before my knees would hold me up. If I had not trimmed the branches on the back side of the tree one of them would have had me for sure.

Terrible tragedy.
Logging without anyone else around has disaster written all over it. At least he had a time when he was expected to be home. Thay way they knew when to get suspicious and go look for him.

I know its nice to get away and spend some time in the woods, but any accidents involving logging are usually serious and require immediate help. Its really not something for folks to do alone.
