"Working with a grandparent turned deadly after a fatal tractor accident left a grandfather injured and a grandson dead.
Stewart Bouverette, 72, and his 18-year-old grandson Brandon Ricker were returning on an Oliver tractor after cutting wood. They were traveling along a ditch. Due to the very muddy field and poor surface conditions, the tractor got too close to the ditch and tipped over, trapping both men, according to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson.
Bouverette was able to free himself after a few minutes but his grandson was still pinned underneath water by the weight of the tractor. He climbed to the top of the ditch and called for help.
Sgt. James Hunt responded to the farm accident around 1:35 p.m. Monday on a field east of McMillan Road, and south of Crown Road in Meade Township (MI), according to Hanson.
Hunt and Bouverette weren't able to free Ricker because the tractor, pulling a trailer and log splitter, was too heavy. Eventually, with the help of Kinde area firemen, Central Huron Ambulance personnel and people who came to help with a loader, they were able to lift the tractor. "
