Sounds like another story that got started by the group of old men who gather and tell stories at the coffee house every morning. It's a good way to make a battery explode.

At the beginning of the video he makes a big deal about having good and proper ventilation. He even shows the big fan he is using. I was taught that lead acid batteries explode because of hydrogen build up. If the battery is sealed very well the excess pressure from the hydrogen can cause the battery to burst, sometimes violently. If the battery is not that well sealed hydrogen can mix with the air and then a spark or other heat source can cause an explosion from the hydrogen burning. I don't see how a battery, with the vents open and with air blowing across, could build up dangerous levels of hydrogen gas. Is there another way for a battery to explode when each cell is open to the atmosphere? I don't think so but please tell me if I am wrong. The batteries he had connected to the welder were all shown with open vents while being charged.
