I had trouble getting the grease zerk for the middle spindle of my 60" MMM to accept grease. I unscrewed it & got it to feed, so I thought problem was solved. Trouble was that it now takes grease, but I only see grease coming out from under the orange cap on top of the spindle pulley [see pic] - - none on the bottom of the deck. I always pump grease into the spindle fittings till I can see it coming out the bottom.

Any thoughts?

Thanks - Jack

Mine has always come out there. 400hrs and no problems yet.

If you are unable to get grease out the bottom of the spindle, then there is a blockage somewhere along the path that the grease takes to get to the bottom bearing. I suggest that it would be best to disassemble the entire spindle, clean all passages and then fill with fresh grease. I have found from experience that mixing greases can cause grease hardening problems at a later date. When this happens, it is always best to disassemble and refill with fresh grease after everything is cleaned. Also, try to keep the same grease for the same fittings whenever possible. It isn't as important in things such as the loader or backhoe pivots, but when it comes to bearings, it is quite important. Use a high quality high temperature bearing grease. I have a single grease gun filled with a high quality bearing grease that is devoted to use only on fittings that supply grease to bearings. I have another that is filled with extreme pressure grease that I use for the loader and backhoe. Dusty

That is NOT a blade spindle - It is just the belt idler pulley! It looks fine.

The blade spindle is directly beneath the gearbox, zerk for it is near the left margin in your photo.

The grease is just coming out the path of least resistance. That being the top in this case. I wouldn't worry to much about it. Over half of my idler pulley's only purge grease out of one side and have been like that since new.

Another way to look at is like this. The pulley is being pulled down by gravity. When you pump grease into it, it comes out the top (path of least resistance again). Try picking up on the pulley and see if grease comes out the bottom. You might find that simply picking up the pulley will let the grease come out the bottom.

Russell - - you nailed it.

I hate operator error, especially when I'm the operator. Don't know why I missed that - - bad case of deep-freeze between the ears. I tried the correct zerk & it took the grease like I expected it too. At least all my earlier efforts got the pulley well lubed.

Thanks,

Jack
