I may have put this post in the wrong place earlier /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif so I'll repeat here: I could use some help understanding what is happening with our newly installed Trane dual fuel heat pump/gas furnace with variable speed fan. The unit has been installed for 4 days and has mostly run 'aux heat mode'. It appears to have difficulty raising the house temp three degrees (from 68 to 71). The unit runs most of the time. How can I tell if the Aux heat is using the gas furnace? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Also, this morning was the first night the temp dropped below 30. When I woke up this morning, the house was cold (inside temp was 64 set to temp 79 and no fan was running). I set the thermostat control to emergency heat and was able to get the house warmed back up to 70 over the course of an hour. Does anyone know what could cause the system to drop to 64? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I have it set now to 'heat' and it appears to be working. I will call the installers on Monday however, I believe that they are not as well versed in getting these systems set up to work together and I have gotten conflicting info from the installer and the sales guy and don't know who to believe. The installer did have difficulty getting the gas furnace backup to work with the outdoor sensor and had to add a TA+ board in the crawlspace. He told me i might need another board outside to control the system. The sales guy says i should just set the thermostat and the system will do the job. I'm frustrated because after spending a significant amount of money I feel like we should have just gotten a high efficiency gas furnace and called it a day. Did we make the wrong choice?

I have the heat pump with the Elec furn. and I get the same thing. I set it at 71 and in the morning it is 68 or maybe 69 at best. I am starting to miss the standard old gas furnance I had at my last place.....

Sounds like they need to setup the programming on it. On mine the aux heat will kick in if the heat pump doesn't raise the temp 1 degree within X minutes. I think 15 but don't remember for sure. Also if you raise the thermostat more than 2 deg the aux heat will kick in to raise the temp fast.

Right now its 20 deg outside and the pump will run for bit putting out modest heat. Then the aux heat, propane, kicks in.

I remember we had some odd things happening when it was first installed. They forgot to put batteries in the programmable unit.

Last year we a reversing valve go bad and when there was a call for heat it would blast cold air then kick in the propane /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.

Theres definitely something wrong, at temps above 30 a heatpump shouldn't even need the aux heat to keep up.

When we moved into our new house many moons ago, 1st thing I noticed was that my brand new split system heatpump was running in aux mode way too much too. The outside unit would run for a few minutes, make a loud swoosh sound then stop. The aux heat would then kick in. It was the Christmas holiday so I lived with it for a few days.
Called the installing dealer back and it ended up that the lines they used that connected the inside unit to the outside unit were precharged and sealed lines and that the installer forgot to "open" the valves at the units to allow the refrigerant to flow through the lines. The outside unit would run until it blew the pressure relief valve then shut down, forcing the unit into aux/emergency heat mode.
Your problem could be similar or the thermostat may be wired incorrectly or one or both units may not be corrctly wired for your dual fuel application.
Needless to say, the heatpump should have no trouble keeping up a constant 70 degree inside temp with the outside temps above 30 degrees.
If the installers can't get it right then you may want to contact the manufacturer, but I'd give the installing dealer the time to get it right.

Good luck

I think the manufacture is going to refer you back to the installer. If they won't or can't get it right I would call the state board in your state that over sees H.V.A.C. contractors. ( if there is one) Do this only if they won't correct the problem ! It should be an easy fix. Your unit should keep up as long as the outside temps are 30-35 deg. anything under & your unit should auto. switch to gas faf.
