SAW THE SAME THING EARLIER IN THE WEEK only with a HARLEY MOTORCYCLE. was checking it out for a friend, no reserve, starting bid of $500 pre approved bidders only. only thing the bike was worth at least $35,000. was pulled very fast.

A friend of mine listed his Jeep in AutoTrader. A few weeks into it a guy from another country emailed him and told him he would like to buy it for twice as much as listed. Why, because he had a friend he had to re-imburse and the jeep was to go to him, yes a cashiers check would be mailed to my friend and was. The check turned out to be bad, my friend still had the Jeep luckily. However, this guy from the other country now has international Attorneys going after my friend for the Jeep and wants to make arrangements to pick it up, yeah right. I guess what I am saying there was talk before in regards to playing with these people a bit and see how far it goes. I am saying don't even mess one bit with them as now my friend has to consult with an attorney over the deal even with having a counterfeit cashiers check in had. It is a mess not worth playing around with is my advice.

Some friends of mine have an e-bay store: they got all messed up about 2~3 weeks back, couldn't get in for the life of them tried and tried to contact e-bay by phone/internet couldn't get through . seems someone HACKED their password, and gained access, posted a BUNCH of stuff for sale QUICK SALE stuff one day or less, big tv's etc they finally got in and started receiving all these e-mails saying the MONEY ORDER is in the mail please send the big ticket item to them at such & such address. when they checked the site they had over 3 grand in sales due to this fraud & E-Bay had charged THEM for all the % upfront no the credit card of account! I guess they are getting it straightened out but still a FEW got scammed!

Never use CASH or MONEY ORDERS anymore. might as well give the crooks you're house keys and car keys with you wallet & social security info too boot... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

if to be true it probably IS, NEVER buy anything with the QUICK BUY stuff or BUY IT NOW at a LOW PRICE, heck If I see a BUY IT NOW I usually don't even pay attension to the hole thing anymore, auction ONLY and or MAYBE a auction & Buy it now at a fair price and I'll still only bid if there is at least a 5+ day auction never those one day ones..

More than likely they weren't hacked. They may have politely handed the scammers the password. It happened to someone I know. The scammers look for people with high positive feedback ratings. They will send the seller an e-mail stating that they need to update their personal information. The e-mail appears to come from e-bay and will have an ebay. com email address. They will even provide a hyperlink to click to go to the website to do the update. Everything looks perfectly like ebay's website. When the person goes and updates their info, they are actually typing it in to a bogus ebay site. They some how mask their true e-mail address. On your email account you can usually set your system to give more details about the sender. Instead of just seeing the fake ebay address, you will see their real address. The key thing to remember is that ebay or any other legitimate business will e-mail you wanting a password or an update. If you are unsure about what to do, type the web address into your web browser, DO NOT click on a hyperlink that is sent to you.

Mark,

I've been using Ebay for quite a number of years and I have to respectfully disagree with you about the Buy it Now option.

This option is used to guarantee you win the auction, usually for a small premium in price. I use it all the time. If you are selling something, use this option, as it increases your chances of selling it, and many times faster and even may be a higher price.

Low prices are the nature of an auction- especially on used items. If they are absurd, be wary. But remember, many auctions start at ridiculous prices to attract bidders, but in reality will sell for quite a bit more...

I absolutely agree on avoiding check or money order purchases for anything large. For large items you should consider using one of the escrow services to protect both buyer and seller.

Be advised- credit card purchases made via Paypal do NOT give you the same credit card protection you get when purchasing directly with a credit card. Things like disputing charges, etc work differently. Be sure to read the options you have from Paypal before using it. (I use Paypal often myself)

One more piece of advice for Paypal. They require you to link to a bank account after a certain $$ amount (cumulative for all purchases). I suggest opening a separate checking account and keep a small amount of $$ in it for Paypal only. In the event of fraud or other problems, you won't lose the farm /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I get one or two of these updates a day, from ebay and every major banking firm in the USA it seems. I never pay attention because i don't bank at them but fear for those who do. The prominence of this activity leads me to believe they are scamming big dollars.
Ive had several ask for my ATM PIN number!

Usually if you place your cursur on the web link it is obvious it is not correct becasue it will have www then some garbage alpha numerics then maybe the bank or paypal name embedded somewhere.

something form ebay or paypal or whoever should begin with the main domain name of the company, but as it has been said, no legitimate institution would need to get information this way.

Be safe.
