Another snake oil or not?

Wow, seems almost too good to be true. And you were not kidding about the price!

Hi all,

OK, suppose we build a "home" for our tractor, and we also want to insulate it, is this stuff another one of those "If it's to good to be true..."

Nansulate Home Protect Thermal Insulation and Mold Resistance Coatings

Does anyone know anything about this stuff, other than it's expensive?

Thanks,
Ray

I dunno, I'm willing to believe that nanotechnology holds some incredidable products for us. However ... I would like to sees onmething like UL laboratoris or Consumer reports or something. If I owned the company I would be looking to have my product tested by well recognized organizations. So my thoughts would be a hold for further verification. When such high claims are made outside verification is critical.

I saw a similar product on Bob Vila once. They were building a low price home out of shipping containers, and they used a space-age paint to insulate it. They claimed R-12 performance with only the thickness of a credit card. Vila held a piece of sheet metal in his had while they heated the uncoated end to red hot with a torch. I still don't know if its snake oil or not- I'd have to do my own testing....

I'm kind of with you, willing to believe. I to have seen some demonstrations of similar products that had good R value for a very thin layer. Even some of the insulation they put on structural beams in skyscrapers is getting really thin using modern insulation for fire protection. The research in the field really took off after 9-11 looking for better fire insulation for structural beams.

The magic word would be aerogel. I wonder if they have that incorporated into the paint.

The way I read the thermotesting report, they took a wall with an R value of about 1 and increased it to R1.25. Fiberglass batts would have made it R13

'SPYDRLK',
Thanks for the thought of "Aerogel", googled it and found it's very interesting!

'ROX',
Agree with you, but who knows, maybe they are trying to get UL & Consumer reports, but how long is that going to take?

Just more FYI, I sent them an email wondering if their product would work on the floor of my enclosed porch. Paint it on the pressure treated 2x8's used for the floor, cover the 2x8's with 1/4" hardboard, put carpet on top of the hardboard, and then would I get the insulating benifits of their 'Nansolate'? The response was, yes, but I would have to let it dry for at least 30 days first.

Hmmm, if this was 'snake oil' wouldn't they have said something like "sure, no problem"? Instead, it was, gotta wait 30 days, even knowing "having to wait" is something customers don't want to hear?

Darn! If it wasn't so expensive, I'd think about gambling!
