There is a family down the road from us that can't seem to keep their animals put up. They don't know the first thing about keeping horses or anything else either becasue they are keeping horses, pigs, cows, chickens, goats and last I saw a couple pit bulls in the same pen.
4 times now their stud horses has been out here to greet me in the morning. I'm just over a mile away. It's been here the last two mornings in a row and I scared it off with the shotgun both times. It had gone right through my electric fence and was grazing away in my alfalfa field. I didn't shoot AT it but I did scare it. I love horses and own a few myself so I'd never hurt one.

Given the care these neighbors take of theirs though I am very concerned about it carrying diseases or something over here and breaking things.

What would you do? I called the sheriff the first time and I'm about to do it again right now. This time I'm probably going to get ugly about it. I know if the deputy that comes out looks in any one of their vehicles they will find things that they shouldn't have. I thought about mentioning that to them. I don't allow that family on my property any more because of things I've seen.

Is that going to far I was wondering? I'm really ticked off about that horse breaking things over here and trampling up my alfalfa. Also about how they take care of their animals.

Just call the police every time it happens and let them deal with it. Do you have local animal control agency? If so, call them, too.

Agreed!! Those folks will have to pay everytime they pick up their animals and that will probably get their attention before anything else will.

In my county if someone elses livestock gets on your land the owner is liable. If one catches the animal the county will come and get it....

Then they start billing the owner lots of money until they come get the animal.

I used to own some land in a subdivision. One twit owned about 20 acres and like to raise sheep. He also would mention every chance he could that he was a lawyer either to impress or scare people I guess. He would not fence in his land and the sheep would got to a neighbors house and eat the landscaping. One or two sheep got caught and the county called.

After the county sent some nasty grams and the bill for boarding the sheep the idiot fenced in his land.

Maybe you county does something similar and you can catch the horse.

We have an animal control officer in our area that we can call (anonymously) to pick up loose animals. He charges a fee and storage charges until the owner picks them up. Once someone pays this fee a couple of times they usually make sure their animals don't get loose again. ;)

This could be a very bad situation to allow to happen again and again especially if you have mares or stud horses.

There are so many people in this world who do not take proper care of their animals that it bothers me greatly when I think about it. I do my share to take care of as many as I can and help some people with theirs, then I have to shut my eyes to the other many abuses or it will drive me nuts. I hope they live FAR down the road from you.

Ditto.. I'd call the law if this was a ongong problem. ( A single occurence.. no.. but multiple.. yes.. ). It's been my experience that horses do not like hogs.. keeping them in the same pen is asking for trouble. Many o fthe other animals are fine with horses.. IE.. cows, goats.. etc. Chickens tend to stay out of the way.. though i have seen flattened chickens before ..

These people bought a young goat from me a couple months ago and threw it in with the pigs and horses. It didn't last a day. He tried telling me the horse ate it.

I don't believe that really but their horses do look hungry enough to eat meat.

My biggest problem with them is drugs. Everyone here knows the whole family is nearly always stoned on something. Most of them have been to prison. I rebuild military rifles here and don't want people like that even around my property. Especially ones that have already been to prison. I had to call the cops, anonymously, a week ago because I caught one of them riding around with a shotgun in his truck. He was out shooting rabbits and whatever else moved on the sides of the roads. He's only been out of prison for 3 months. He's back now.

Anyway, now you know why I no longer want to go over there and tell them to come get their horse again. I don't even want to be near people breaking the law. The sheriffs department here started their own animal control department for the county recentlty. They are sending a deputy with a trailer to catch the horse and go have a talk with the owners. I hope they take it away this time for good.

I've rescued a lot of horses myself. 3 of the 5 I own now are all rescued. 2 of them came from the sheriffs department. It makes me sick sometimes seeing people mistreat animals.

Usually not good for a felon to be caught with a firearm.

I would suggest you call the sheriff or animal control and make sure you do not capture or put the animal into a stall. One time, I put three stray bulls into a pasture so they would quit roaming around on the road. When I call the sheriff, they told me they would not respond if the animal was fenced in. They suggested I bring civil charges against the owner, but in the meantime, if the animals were off the road, it was none of their worry. I asked them what they would do if the animals "accidently" escaped. They told me if that should happen, I could call and they would respond.

Animals in the road are a big concern of mine too. I don't know if any of you have hit a cow before but it's happened to me twice. Both times in probably the worst imaginable car to have it happen in too. The first time was when I was a kid, before seatbelt laws came to my state. I was in the little space behind the seats in my dad's 71 MG midget. He hit a full grown bull Angus at about 50 MPH or so. That hurt.

Then several years after that, I had a 65 MGB and hit a full grown Holstein. I was going around a sharp corner at night and didn't even see it coming.

Around here in the last year there have been 5 horses hit in the road that I know of within just 5 miles of us. 3 of them were all at the same time and killed the lady that hit them. They got out after another car plowed through the owners fence.

The other 2 were owned by an idiot that lived right on the side of the highway. His idea of mowing the grass was staking the horses out with a piece of baling twine tied to one of those cheap screw in dog stakes. Ke caused a big truck to hit both of them and then go through his neighbors house.

There really is a lot of liability in owning a horse with idiots like this around. It's probably why there are so few places that will even give insurance to a horse facility anymore.

Oddly enough, the one whose horses got out through no fault of his own when someone crashed through his fence is the one that got sued. The old man that tied them out in his yard where his front door is 30 feet from the road didn't get sued. He's on welfare so noone bothered.
