i have a 8x12 single axle small trailer with wooden floors, each tire states that it is rated for about 1500 lbs, the trailer that i am dreaming about is under 3000 pounds and would fit, i do not see many of these tractors on these single axle trailers, most are on tandem trailers, i will be taking it quite a ways on the highway, about 250 miles? the tractor might be a kubota l3400 with fel?? thanks in advance for any advice...am i crazy??

9569; Take a look at the axle rating for your trailer. What size are the tires. Sounds like it may be way too light for a machine the size your talking. If I'm not mistaken that 3400 is close to the size of a TC35. I haul mine on a 12K MacLander tandem. Alighter trailer than mine would work, but I myself wouldn't consider anything lighter than a 7K tandem. At any rate, a tandem with brakes on both axles is the cat's you know what.

9569, You bet your crazy but can you do it? probably should you do it? no.
1. your single axle probably doesn't have brakes.
2. The Kubota 4wd L3400 weighs around 2600 with no FEL and no other attachments, fuel, oil etc so before you start your are loaded to max tire ability how about the axle is it a 3K,5k,7k or?
3. Have you checked with your state DOT laws most require or are about to require brakes and inspections. The ticket for pulling overloaded on a trailer without proper safety gear will cost you darn near as much as a new tandem wheel trailer with correct axles, brakes and tires for your intended load.
4. check your coupler and ball ratings as well a 1-7/8 ball will not cut it typically and the shank size probably ought to be at least an 1 inch or greater for the difference in price get the 2-5/16 ball with a 1-1/4 shank and you'll never have to worry about a ball failure you can just worry about everything else.
5. Thats an expensive roadside decoration your looking at when you blow your first tire 5 miles from home and your spare halfway to where your headed in the middle of nowhere with a tandem you can slow down take it real easy and limp into town if you have a tire go bad and then a spare failure as well.
Now on my last statement your thinking what are the chances well I've pulled a overloaded Boy Scout Trailer for my sons troop for 6 or 8 years in that time we've had a road tire and spare fail twice. Now imagine your pretty new Tractor sitting on that trailer disconnected from your truck sitting by the side of the road with you gone to get a new tire. Make sure and write down all your serial numbers because it was orange maybe not a great discription to give the officer.
I'm not trying to be a turd but trade your single axle for a tandem with brakes and a 2-5/16 coupler you won't be sorry and the difference should be less tham one ticket for driving overloaded with an implement hanging off the back of the tractor and trailer because you didn't want to make the trip twice.

9596,

You need a bigger trailer.

I just checked the Kubota web page and a 3400 HST was 2600 pounds, add FEL my guess about 1100 pounds. The trailer is not heavy enough. You must also factor in the weight of the trailer itself.

If you get loaded tires add several hundred more pounds.

My 12,000 GVW rated trailer weighs almost 3,000 pounds, (I had several options added). I went with a 18' trailer thinking that when we bought our house we would get a small BX 23 or so. Long story short, we bought just shy of 20 acres and a L3430. I wish I had a 20' trailer, it would give a little more room to adjust the tongue weight.

L3400 without FEL weighs 2500 lbs. Adding a FEL is at least another 800 lbs. Add weight of trailer you are way overweight.
Have you thought about renting a U-Haul car trailer. Renting and returning to the same dealer usually is not to expensive.

9569; Sounds like a good plan until you get your own. Good luck with whatever machine you get also. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm not saying it can't be done.. but your nerves will be rattled afer pulling a heavy load on a single axle trailer for any length of time..

good luck

You will want a tandem axle trailer.

If you get the tractor tires behind the axle on the trailer
it will be a hand full.

I strapped a boiler in my FEL and put it on my tandem axle trailer. It moved the tractor on the trailer back less than two feet , but it put the rear tractor tires behind the trailer axles.

I didn't save any time with this move. I couldn't go over 35 MPH . If the tractor is up where it belongs I can go down the interstate a 65 and not even know it is there.

The other thing to consider is trailers with a rating of under 3,000 pounds don't need brakes. You will want then.
You can say I will just slow down and leave more distance , but some nut case will pull out in front of you and you will need the extra braking power.

I was coming down a mountain when some idiot backed out of there driveway without looking and had all my brakes smoking. If I didn't have trailer brakes I would have smacked him.

Bottom line, get a trailer that will do the job safely , your life isn't worth saving a couple of bucks.
