Antonio Carraro Serie 16 Bitrac HS
Hi,
My AC Serie 16 diff lock has stopped working. When the diff lock is off , the normal diff function is there. With the diff lock on, the wheels seem to be independent of each other. If I engage the centre lock, the left hand wheel is engaged and the right hand wheel just freewheels.
Does anyone have any idea of how the lock works and what may be causing this problem.
Also, can I run it this way (diff lock disengaged) without causing further damage?

Thanks,
Richard.

I have worked with the AC TF9400, but not familiar with the center dif. lock. If you jack up the axle and spin one wheel, the opposite wheel should turn in the opposite direction with the transmission in gear or not at all with the transmission in neutral. If both wheels turn in the same direction, then the diff. lock is engaged. You shouldn't operate the tractor continuously if the diff. lock is engaged.

Thanks TractorTech,
The problem is not with the centre diff lock but the one at the PTO end of the tractor. With that diff lock off, the diff reacts normally. With the diff lock on, it is as though the left hand wheel (if you are standing behind the tractor looking fwd) is totally free.
I only use the diff locks if I am slashing up and down a really steep hill, ripping , or pulling on something really heavy.
I am on Norfolk Island- Will probably have to strip the diff down myself to find the problem and then get the parts from Sydney. Am hoping someone can tell me what I am up against before I start on it.
Regards,
Richard.

Richard, I understand what you are talking about. Most diff. locks use a pin or clutch to lock out the differential action. Again, if you raise the axle off of the ground and spin the wheels with and without the lock on, you can find out what is going on before you have to pull apart. Also, whether mechanical or electric, you may get lucky and be able to repair externally. Hope it is nothing major.

I believe this uses a sliding collar on the axle splines to lock it. Will advise what it was when I pull it to bits in a month or so.

Regards,
Richard.
