Will raking the tops off hurt anything? I want to clear the area back so we can get in and out. Waist high weeds now make it tough.

No, raking the top off will not hurt anything. Likewise, it won't solve the ant problem. Like Eddie said - lots of chemicals will put them down. I WOULD NOT suggest burning - an ant hill can smolder/burn for a long time and ultimately start a fire. I fill a five gallon bucket with ant hill/ants and make a mad dash for my lake. A real treat for the bass.

I agree.

Lol, I bet Eddie Thanks for the advice, I am going to scrape the debris back off of this and burn it this weekend then we will spread a granular bait then follow up again in a week or so. Having a tough time finding a granular bineffrin bait, but coop said once I find the product they can probably order it.

I hope to find it feed sack size bag. The effected area is about 1.5 acres, spread out of course. About 25 hills I know about,

If you use the granular formulation, you will need about 125 lbs per acre. If you can spray it, you will need about 43 ounces per acre of the 7.9%. Spraying in will cost less, but if you don't have a sprayer, you will get the same results with the granular.

Remember that bifenthrin is sold under many different brand names. So, when you go to the co-op, read the label on all of their insecticides to see if they have one with bifenthrin as the active ingredient.

And, it can be packaged in different concentrations, so be sure to read and follow the label to make sure you apply at the correct rate.

Thanks Aron that is cheaper than the granular and free shipping.

I have a pull behind and a backpack sprayer. I can get the open area w the pull behind and the wooded area with the backpack.

Top Choice would be best but requires a license to purchase. Takes about 4 weeks to be fully effective but broadcast over the entire area you want controlled and you'll be ant free for a year.

Advion works well and isn't terribly expensive.

Bifenthrin or permethrin will both do the job as well but the residual on them is only 4 - 8 weeks, depending on the weather.

I have used 2 - 3 gallons of boiling water on the mound followed by augering with a hand drill down a foot or two followed by more boiling water. Maybe it just makes them move but it sure kills a lot of ants and eggs.

My Dear wife uses a recipe that she makes to permanently eradicate ants. Very simple, not dangerous to pets or other creatures, not expensive.

Recipe: six table spoons of borax powder, and six of sugar in enough hot water to form a slurry, well mixed.

place slurry in a number of containers with holes to admit ants but not rainwater. Place containers near ant trails or nests..and leave it alone for several weeks.

Ants will carry the mixture into their nests and eat it..and feed it to their, queen and her brood..and then they will all die. Works on all kinds of ants, including fire ants, carpenter ants, what ever. No dinkum. Ants will return from other places, however. Wife does this every summer because we live on a place where sand predominates.

Before she discovered this we had ants everwhere and in eveything. not anymore. No ants..none, now. Not sure if it works on termites, we have none of these in our cold climate... but hey, the mixture is so cheap to make you have nothing to lose by trying it...except ants!!!

Check it out.

You have fire ants in New Brunswick? I thought they lked only hot cilmates. They just migrated to NC only about 10 years ago.
