Growing up in Tombstone there were big red Fire Ants. It hurt like the devil when they bit you.
Then there was the Pizz Ants, they smelled like there name when squashed.

These Ants are similar in looks to the Pizz ants or the little sugar ants. But way meaner. No interest in sugar, they want Meat, bread on most things like that.

Seems like the meat they like the most is Mine. They also like the dogs. My small dog likes to lay in the bed, so at first I though they were flea's as some of them can jump. So all the dogs got the flea treatment, even though they had never had flea's.

When the bite it just stings a little, but real soon the bite starts itching. The itch soon spreads out to quarter or 1/2 dollar size. The skin around the bite starts dieing by the next day. If I scratch it just spread out farther.

Have tried itch cream with little effect. Tiger Sports Balm Works better. DMSO on top of the other 2 also helps.

Some have wings & fly (Queens ??), some are clear and some have black butts.

To get rid of them get some Amdro Ant Block. I use it here in Colorado on the red ants that build the big mounds. They think its's food and take it back to the nest. The next day they are almost all gone.

Thanks Jack, Appreciate the advice, will have to try some.

Been using SEVIN 5% and it works pretty good. But getting low on it.

Been hoping someone that has similar type ants would let me know what they are or come from. Never seen ants like these before.

Thanks Again,
Jim

Jim Remember the barber shops used to carry a hair oil called "Rose scented hair oil" We used to go to trash areas and pick up these bottles with the scent and using a sharp shooter shovel dig into a ant hill put bottle deep enough to bury all except top. Then watch as ants would push others away to get into the hole. would fill the pint jar in very few minutes. maybe they have learned not after the last 70 years. But then was inteesting to watch.
Got a picture of these large ants.

Hi Ken, Thanks,
Since the biggest problem is in the house, should I drill a few holes in the floor.

These ants are really tiny, smaller than the termites in this area. Yard is full of new little mounds. Got rid of most of the big ants a few years ago. Now and then find a nest.

Holes in the floor. Do like the old time ranchers did when the rat was in corner. shoot it.When in adbanded old building check the holes in corners. Think ants and 22 cal shot would work.
Wait until wife or female guest is out shopping.

Those look like what we call fire ants here in Mississippi. Very, very common here. Dark reddish brown; varying sizes. They nest in mounds and come pouring out when you disturb the mound.

I get a warm sense of satisfaction every time I pulverize a mound with my mower. I make a special effort to smash it with my wheel on the return pass. I know it won't make a difference, but it's the least I can do to harass the meanest creature on earth.

I have heard from several farmers this year that tobacco dust is the best for all bug pests around the house ( ants, ticks, etc...). I have never tried it, mostly because I don't where to get my hands on it. One farmer said he got it from a Menenite farmer he knows. Well I heard it from enough old timers that I thought I would throw it out there.

I was at my folks place in S. Florida last spring, got some of those ants on my feet. Nasty little buggers!!! I ended up with what looked like pimples on my toes. Took about a week to go away.

It seems the little suckers come at you with their jaws open. Bite hurts and then the itch starts. Itch is much worse than a mosquito bite.

Have pretty well wiped them out in the house. They had started building a nest under a bathroom rug. Got the worst of them right around the house. Now to get a lot more Sevin and go around the whole yard.
