I want to strip and paint my 60" Mid mount mower. Iam considering having it sand blasted and using a primer and painting. Does anyone know the proper primer to use under the finish paint. I'm considering using spray cans because I don't have a sprayer. I probably could borrow a wagner if I needed to. I've heard you should use a moisture sealer primer to keep the rust from starting again. Does anyone have any experiance with this I would also like to work on the frame under the motor where the black is on my 955 it has some rust showing through. I just purchased it used and need to give it some TLC.

The can paints just don't harden as well as paint you shoot from a gun after you have added hardener.

I'd apply some rust reformer or rust extender first, to inert any rust. You can prime over these. Think the red primer sticks better.
You can buy rust reformer as a Rustoleum brand at Lowes and probably Home Depot. Rust extender is a (I think) NAPA product. They both turn rust (iron oxide, which catalyzes itself) to inert iron sulfide (which is black).
Spray paint from cans won't harden too well in the winter time. You can paint it on at 50 F or above, but it needs some sunshine and temps above about 60ish to harden properly. Be careful spraying from a can inside (where you might want to for warmth). They just might be using something like propane as a propellant.
