Tractor dealers always say you have to use our brand oil for transmission. Kubota for instance says you have to use there DTU oil in there transmission is it really different from the normal trans/hydraulic oil

Some Things to look for in hydraulic fluid are:
Does the fluid you are considering meet the specifications of the fluid specified for your machine? Example for wet brakes or clutches.

Weight or viscosity: this is usually more of a concern when running in hot 100 + degrees or cold ambient temperatures. What works in southern Texas may not work in northern Minnesota.

Usually far more important to keep it and water free vs brand of oil used.

Hydraulic oil likely has very few additives. It's just highly refined, about 20w by engine oil specs, oil with additives tailored for the type seals and those wet brakes that most tractors have. Best to go with what they recommend. I'm stretching the 200 hour changeout on the JD to 400 hours. I think 200 hours is really too short. That's only 5-7,000 miles figuring 25-35 mph equivalent. It's like their every other year coolant change recommendations. Waaaayyy out of line with standard practice now in our cars, trucks and SUVs. Stuck back in the 1980s.

You need to stick with the same spec., not necessarily the brand

Industrial hydraulic oil yes, but "universal tractor oil" has a lot of additives in it. Viscosity and friction modifiers, additives to handle water/prevent rust, extreme pressure additives for the final drive, etc. It is false economy to use cheap oil in tractor and hydrostatic transmissions. Like ddbackhoe says - you can change brands but stick with the same spec. ISZ
