Just looking for opinions from anyone who has actually used a Nest. I've been reading about them since that came out a couple of years ago, and it seems like it would be just the ticket for a house we have. Them boys are a bit proud of em, but might pay back.

What say ye?

I don't have one (haven't seen the need) but I know a few people at work who do and rave about them.

Have one and like it. I haven't noticed any savings on my bills. In fact, they seem higher. Why do I like it then? First, you can control the thermostat with your smartphone. That means you can turn it on, off and adjust the timings of certain things. I also like the fact that you can have the fan turn on and off instead of the a/c or heat. This is useful to just move the air around. I like the fact that you can very easily adjust the time and date settings on line or on your smart phone. It is very easy to do. I work from home some days and not others and this is easy to adjust. I like the fact that it turns off if we are not around and goes into energy savings mode. Finally, it is super simple to install. Not that installing a thermostat is hard, but the Nest comes with stickers, screwdriver, etc. and is easy to connect to your wireless connection.

Is it worth the money? I don't know, like I said we haven't seen a costs savings. However, we needed a new thermostat and the Nest was about 100 dollars more than a comparable thermostat. If I were to do it again, I would make the same choice.

Thanks a lot, just what I need to know. I'm not looking to save on energy cost so much as just being able to easily control from anywhere. Think I'll get one.

I have the 3M equivalent and love it. I don't know that we see much of a reduction in our utility bill. It IS nice when my wife wakes up in the middle of the night and rather than nudging me and telling me to go lower the thermostat; does it herself from her tablet on her nightstand. The only downside was that I had to run new thermostat wires that included a positive feed so the radio had power (because the wifi would eat batteries in just days!) Thankfully that was a one-time ordeal though and only cost me $25 worth of 7-wire thermostat wire.

Colleague at work has one and is also very pleased. I believe he is most impressed with the wifi remote capability, too. I had a chance to inspect it, and it is a very well thought out and executed design.

My son the computer expert and gadget man has a whole house control that uses a similar T-stat, he can lock and unlock every door in his house except the utility room, open garage doors, turn on and program TV's T-stats, his Kuerig, PC and nearly anything else. Frankly I'm happy with my programmable digital T-stat and and door key.

Everybody seems to like the remote connectivity aspect. I guess nice if you are into gadgets like that. As far as energy savings, it is hard to imagine the savings that they claim, unless you are one to crank up the heat/cooling enough, and have it roll back the settings when you are away.

For the connectivity it is an expensive gadget. I still prefer my Honeywell IAQ touch screen units.

Yeah tech, it's more than just liking the remote control, for me, that's a necessity. Just that ability alone an save me money too, but saving is not my main reason for needing that.
