I am looking to see if anyone on here is in the security system business.

Like most members, I live in the country and I am looking for a security system - without a monthly professional monitoring.

I have dealt with commercial grade cameras and security systems at work, so I am not opposed to something a little more robust. There are just too many DIY kits online that you can't tell what is good or not.

If you prefer to message me directly, that's just fine.

Lots of windows, so I'm wondering if motion sensors are my best bet instead of a ton of window/door sensors.

Been in THAT business thirty years. It's mostly BS! More than ever. Mostly about recurring revenue for the business and NOTHING about SECURITY!

If you'd like to help someone out with building their own system, shoot me a direct message

But I agree with you, it's all about the monthly plan whenever I call local security companies. One came and quoted a system years ago... after I pointed out all of the flaws and the ways someone could get into the home with their "design", I kindly asked them to leave.

That is EXACTLY what I am saying. Monthly FEE and salesman commissions. I had access to FREE monitoring for years and never even took advantage of it. AND sold many non monitored systems. STUPID for my financial wellbeing! A high quality wired system, with an unconventional number of high power sirens is your FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE. I had customers get the front door kicked in and you just saw tire marks in the driveeay where the perps made a hasty exit!

Also, no $5.00 motion detectors. All I used since I went into business was Dual Technology detectors that cost ten times as much as the garbage and cut false alarms to near zero! A very good investment!

The alarm system has not been made that will prevent entry.

The best they will do is detect entry.

Sorry - I should clarify - I was referring to many spots where someone could enter the house, because their design had no window sensor or motion detector coverage in a few areas of the house. If someone gets in, I want everyone in the county to know.

Would be happy to help. But I have outlined most of it. Unfortunately, you might be hard pressed to find a security professional who would or even could meet my requirements. They are all out just to maximise their own profits.

Some buildings at certain times, I don't even bother to lock. Just alarm. Why do I want a broken door?

Systems can be a double edged sword. If you want to catch dirtbags, you want the system as stealth as possible. If you want to deter them, you want a system as visible as possible, ie. foil tape on windows, cameras and signs where people can see them. BUT, then you make some ditbags think you have stuff to protect which can make them more determined. They know they usually have 10-15 minutes at the very least to get in, grab and get out (as discussed in another thread). They'll bust a window or drive a vehicle though a wall if they really want to get in.

If you use cameras, you want them where they can get some information ... a license plate or a face if possible. Many of them are mounted up high to see a wider area which gets the top of vehicles or heads ... not very useful for identifying offenders.

You also want a system that's not dependent on phone lines that can be cut. Cellular system are available, but at a cost of service to be able to call out.

Motion detectors aren't much good if they false due to pets or blowing curtains or decorations. There used to be dual activation units that combined motion with PIR to help avoid those false trips. They had to detect a warm body in addition to motion.

I am so disgusted by my industry. Million dollar house and one, one dollar (landed cost) little pizzo screamer mounted in the basement, next to the panel, because it's CHEAP! And does not threaten your monitoring. A bunch of 30 watt sirens, extra gell cell batteries (to run them) some relays and fuses is such cheap protection, and no one does it!

Just this garbage, lick and stick wireless stuff, a signed contract that says, they are responsible for NOTHING. Disgusting! As effective as airport security. Just an illusion of security!

Like I said, I used only dual techology (PIR and Microwave) detectors since I went into business and it has cut unexplained false alarms almost to ZERO. Working for another company, I got tired of going to premises that had your garbage straight PIR detectors and shrugging my shoulders. Maybe a fly walked accross the detector!
