OK, so I made a smart response the the fire ants and now I am considering my insect issues and one thing that keeps coming up is spiders and spider webs on our security cameras.

It can weeks and months before we can clean them off. I tried home defense but it only lasted a few days.

I have no clue if this will work but to keep wasps and hornets from building nests inside our bird houses we rub the ceiling with a bar of soap. That does work, so for spiders? Might be worth a try.

We found an additive for paint that contains citronella, lemon grass, rosemary, cedar oil, and a bunch of other stuff. We mixed some into paint for our front porch trim, since that area was loaded with wasps, spiders, and other bugs. So far it has made a big difference (and smells real nice). Not sure how long until it wears off though. Maybe you can make or buy a similar concoction and spray in the area of the cameras?

Unplug/turn off the IR lights on the camera. That is what attracts them in most cases. It is far better to have light sources separate from the cameras than all in one.

Hard to beat diatomaceous earth for dealing with creatures with exoskeletons; would it be safe to use around a camera/electronics though? Where its a sealed exterior unit, I'd assume its dustproof.

Turn their pictures over to the local constable and insist they be arrested for trespassing! After all, isn't this the purpose of having the security camera? ;)

You might try "Terro Spider Killer" in the spray can. Got ours at Wal-Mart. spray everything but the lens, and it should last quite a while. We just started using it last week, and there have been no unwanted critters, SO FAR. :2cents: Also, spray the mounting area around the camera for extra protection.

You might try appealing to their intellectual side and use a sign.......:D

Just get a mister system that sprays pyrethrum. They spray in the middle of the night and will eliminate nearly all bugs from your house.

DIY Insect Misting Systems

You could do the whole place or just put nozzles near each camera.

A long time ago when I was a kid I heard that rain would wash the spiders out. But that solution appeared to be temporary because as soon as the sun dried up all the rain, they would be back at it.
