There are several methods of metal deposition in the industry now for building up complex metal shapes. Equipment and program control is expensive but interesting to some that are at the leading edge of metal forming and manufacturing. There is quite a bit of info on the web searching on 'metal deposition'.

Never thought of playing with my MIG to do a crude impersonation of 3D printing but now you got me thinking.
