I bought a old Ford 501 sickle bar mower. I have little experience making hay so I bought a Ford Operator's Manual for Series 501 mowers off of eBay. The first page shows a Clipping wheel Attachment , Part number 149188. It says it is Bundle No. 149188. ?? It says the arm provides a cutting height range from 1 to 9". It's just what I'm looking for!

A Google search doesn't show anything like replacements parts, etc. Does anyone know about this wheel attachment? Does it work? Where can I find one? Can some tell me the dimensions of the wheel, length of the arm, or anything else ? I might be able to make one.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I checked NH parts and the site states "No longer available". I called Messick and received the same information. I was given several salvage yards to call. Messick was very helpful.

Another source is check with the folks on the Yesterdays Tractor web site. They have a lot of folks with knowledge there on older equipment and where to find parts.

Thanks I have tried there too but haven't received any reply yet. I guess the wheel was unusual and few if any were used? It might fit my needs exactly and save a bunch of money so I don't have to buy drum mower.

I just got thinking about this. Most sickle mowers of that vintage were pretty much standard. Only to or three knife spacing holes and inner and outer shoes. On my IH there is an adjustment for both the inner and outer shoes to get cut height. Usually when the bar is riding on the ground, it is the bar thickness plus the guard thickness to the knife slot as the bar will flex when on the ground. If you can post pictures of the inner and outer shoes, we may be able to spot if the adjustment bar is missing, and then you would not need the clipping wheel. If the clipping wheel is outboard, then perhaps you just need a replacement grass board to deflect the cut grass inward for the next pass.

On edit - per the Messick parts diagram you can set the cut height with the inner and outer shoes - they look standard. Perhaps the clipping wheel was used to keep the weight off of the 3pt and let the mower follow the ground better on rough fields. I cant tell where it was mounted on the mower from the picture.

you can bolt a inch and half wide by a 5/16 flat bar of steel to your shoes and figure out high you want to mow. drill a hole in the flat bar and bolt it to the mower. when you want to mow regular height just unbolt the flat bar and bolt the shoes back onto the mower. still have what you started with. if the bottom of the shoe is getting thin weld some flat iron on it. good as new and a lot cheaper.
