Anyone know of someone who was sued becuase of injury done by power equipment? I have this great fear of letting anyone using my lawnmower,tractor,Powertools, atv or Boat.Im kinda scared to let people ride on a boat im getting in case they get an injury im stuck.
It something we are all to afraid of, but hear about everyday.

Not yet !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I knew of a case where a guy took a bunch of folks for a boat ride, hit a wave, causing the boat to 'jump and thump', and one person sitting in the bow area suffered a back injury. They sued him for negligent operation and won. His insurance had to pay.

I guess the bottom line is people can and will sue for just about everything or anything.

tc35dforme touched on it. The key is to buy insurance. You do things as safely as you can, but sometimes stuff happens. Ask your insurance agent about "umbrella" or "excess liability" coverage. I carry an addition $1M of liability protection on my family for about $10 per month. I've seen this protection work (for others) twice in my agency! One was a fatal hunting accident, the other a very serious auto wreck.
Disclaimer: not available in all states, see your agent for details. Your mileage may vary.

Lawsuits aside, I only loan out my tools to a few people. I learned that they tend to come back broken, maybe that is why the person had to borrow a tool in the first place, they had broken theirs. Quite often I don't even find out the tool is broken till the next time I start to use it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Boy do I second this! I have also found that I needed to keep a good list before I stopped loaning my tools or they simply disappeared.

Insurance = backhoe + 50 acres+ closet full of rifles. Please sue /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just kidding. It would put a damper on frivilous lawsuits though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am doing good to hold back spewing enough to write a book... sue happy people, people who won't stay out of your business, people who try to get zoning laws changed because THEY moved in and don't like you being able to do something, people who think they can say what you can do with your own land.... and...and... and

<BREATHE>

A bullet IN them is too good for them. They should just have them ricocheted off their head for a week solid.

slowrev,
My family and the family that owns the adjoining property have been neighbors for nearly 100 years. There has never been a problem with borrowing tools or equipment. We just follow the rules: if you borrow it and you break it....you fix it before you return it.
Seems to have worked out just fine for us.

I could give you quite a few examples of people being sued. One that would hit home with alot of you happened to one of my good friends. His son had a couple friends over. The son and one of the friends were playing inside. The other friend went outside and got on their Gator and started messing around. Hearing the noise the other two boys came out. The son waved him to stop as the rule was no riding machinery. The kid that was in the Gator tryed to show off and wound up turning the Gator over on top of himself. It broke his pelvis. The kid healed and was ok but the parents sued and won $150,000 from them. They had been neighbors for a long time and the mom had went to school with the boys mom and they had been friends since childhood.

A banker friend of mine told me to get umbrella insurance. This kind of insurance protects you from these kinds of people.

I have one million and it is cheap. I don't even remember the cost. You might want 2 or 3 million depending on your spread.

We have a lot of city people running about with their snowmobiles and deer hunters passing through.
