Shame! Shame! Defeating a 'safety' feature.
Safety feature....what safety feature? I figger the faster the mower moves, the less likely I am to stick a foot under it....
Anyone bought a push lawn mower lately?

I stuck a foot under a mower after I had just sharpened the blade. Blade went thunk and stopped when it hit some bone. That was a darned bloody mess. I do not recommend slipping under a lawn mower. They tried to fix me up with local anesthesia but I kept going ouch. Woke up with some staples in my foot. Foot still works as it was a classic "Just a flesh wound." Well maybe a bit more but not really in the big picture. That mower had not safety features like a blade clutch or flywheel brake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKhEw7nD9C4

I guess you missed the smiley face.
Take shorter steps and you wont stick your foot under it. The manufacturer dials in the engine to run at a certain RPM's as a part of the safety factor in the mower. You running it faster defeats that safety feature. But it is your mower, do as you please with it.

Excellent timing for this post. We are looking for a push mower to keep the garden under control and our pathways between the beds. They are 22 inches wide because that's what most push mowers are. I've learned the hard way that if it doesn't have a Honda motor on it, don't buy it. I've been looking at the different brands at the box stores with Honda motors on them and it's come down to front wheel drive or no drive at all. Reading the replies here, I'm leaning towards not getting front wheel drive. It's perfectly flat and probably half an hour of work at the most. Everything else is easily mowed with the zero turn mower. Right now I'm weed eating it, but that's not gonna last much longer as I'm not a big fan of mowing that way.

Eddie...If I could do my push mowing in a half hour I would certainly buy a PUSH mower...but it takes me 45 minutes alone with a walk behind to mow 450' of sloped roadfront culvert that is 12' wide....then I also have the house and 4 outbuildings to mow around, PLUS over 50 trees, planters, etc to trim around. Takes me about 2.5 to 3 hours to do everything with a pusher...and I NEED a self propelled model..mowing with the Deere and MMM takes another 5-7 hours atop that. Have never owned any pushers with engines from Honda, I love the 195cc Briggs engines as they are dead reliable.

I was in your situation and ended up with a Husqvarna with a Honda engine, manual push. Simple and starts every time.

I have always been a Honda fan for self-propelled mowers, but my newest one has gone through 3 carburetors in 3 years. First, they told me it was the ethanol in the fuel, which was a bunch of hooey, I have only run ethanol free fuel in it, then they said it was the pre filter (foam rubber pad) and now they are saying that the EPA emissions regulations require jets that are too small and the clog up easily. I bought a Toro earlier this month and I don't like the ergonomics on it as well as the Honda, but at least it starts without taking it back to the dealer. My 20 year old Honda still runs, but it is wearing down fast now. It was by far the best mower I ever had.
