Anyone build a pto fertilizer spreader?

I have a three point frame and the pto drive hose from a farm trac brand unit. The hopper and spreading plate have rusted out. I was thinking of finding a milk can for the hopper and making a heavy duty spreading plate. Some type of plastic insert on the interior could act as a funnel to direct the fertilizer to the adjustable bottom opening. The larger ones are too hard to store and bulky to attach. The $400. plus price tag isn't that inviting either.
