We were looking to buy some bedroom furniture (been married > 30 years and have been using the wife's Grandparents'). After a lot of online research, my wife decide on a Thomasville bedroom set. The furniture store pieces looked solid enough. We got prices, but since I forgot my notes on the bedroom dimensions, decided to go home and measure to be sure. We'll as I am checking the measurements (It all fits), she found a website with terrible reviews about Thomasville quality and customer service. More than one reviewer commented that what arrived with "made in China" stickers was not the solid pieces showcased as made in America at the store. The drawers failed after a few uses, the odor from the furniture was awful and colors did not match.

So, I was wondering whether any of the TBNers have any recent experience with this company. As one review put it: "it's not the store your parents knew."

Thanks.

Chris

I can't comment about Thomasville furniture but will give my 2 cents on our experiences. Several years ago we looked at Basset furniture in a local store and got prices on a dining room set. Before we placed an order with the store, I priced the same set from a dealer in North Carollina. We saved over 40% on the price of the furniture and the shipping was not very expensive. We had to wait a few weeks but the savings was worth it.

We recently bought a new bedroom set. We went to many local stores to determine our taste and sended up ordering a set from a store about an hour away. We ordered Amish made furniture with quality we were satisfed with. After we ordered it, we found another dealer selling the same line of furniture and priced part of the set from them as a comparison. The price for part of the set was the same as the entire set we had recently ordered. The salesman at the store we ordered from said they were in the business of selling heirmloom furniture to pass from one generation to the next, not just somehting that looks good today.

Take your time and look around a lot to make sure you find what you like style wise and quality wise.

Virtually all furniture made and sold by the big furniture manufacturers is made in Red China. Such is the case in regards to Thomasville. Some of the upholstery is still currently being made in NC. Henkel-Harris, Robert Bergelin, Wright Table are some Companies that still make furniture in this Country. There are other individuals and companies that make furniture also, but their clientèle are mainly the wealthier buyers that request a specific piece. This is not the norm for the masses because that it remains cost prohibitive for us working people. The Amish and Mennonites still make good , quality pieces also.

Find a company that sells Amish furniture or such quality names as Bernhardt, Stickley, Henredon, or Kincaid that have facilities in NC and VA. All these companies have various levels of furniture components made in China. However, many of those are made to exclusive standards and codes that require the suppliers meet rigid codes of conduct. I would stay away from the stores such as Thomasville and Bassett. They are nothing more than outlets like Ashley Furniture to my way of thinking. Mostly veneered woods over particle board. Solid oak, ash, maple, and cherry woods are hard to find and very expensive. Don't be surprised if a bedroom suite is priced $6k to $8k or more. My Kincaid solid oak bedroom furniture was about $5k in 2002 and would have been more if were not being discontinued. It will pass on as a family heirloom.

We bought a used Thomasville bedroom set at a consignment store 5 years ago. It's all oak. Bed, dresser, chest of drawers, and a cabinet with a French name that I can't remember what the name is right now. It's the best wood furniture that we own. This is heavy duty furniture and we have had no problems with quality.

Thank you all for the advice.

I noticed most of you have posts in the thousands! (I am a person of fewer words and even then I wish the ones I say I would choose more carefully.)
