You bring back old memories with your story. I had a 72 CJ5, bought used in 77 and drove it for 5 years. It had the 304 V8 w/manual trans. It was definitely a purist's machine. No AC, A very loud heater that you could barely hear over the road noise. I drove it from NC to Miami and back straight thru, two different summers when I was in college. It would go where NO other machine would go if you knew how to drive it and control the power. The worst thing about it was the fact that it was top heavy. I rolled mine 3 different times, with only minor scratches - so I was lucky.
You know though...Of all the vehicles I have and have had, that Jeep left me with the best memories of all. It was a fun machine that commanded respect. I loved that Jeep.
Now my son is about to turn 16 and is looking at the TJ's, a much improved model of the classic. Much safer, more conveniences, etc. Higher prices too.
I am a lucky man to get to relive my Jeep days thru him.
The Rubicon's are especially nice - but so is the price. I can't believe they want $29K for those babies.
It is a fun vehicle for a young single person...and maybe one day an old empty nester Dad!!!
Last comment I have to anyone thinking about buying one is do NOT try to drive them like a sports car - trust me on that one.
