On the left side of the frame in the suction screen area? I took it out by mistake and thought, ut oh, I put it back in the way it came out quickly.

Haven't taken that one out, but did remove a similar item on the transmission cover connected to the 4WD selector lever. I believe it's a center-position detent for one of the controls on the left fender there. If you didn't lose any fluid I doubt you harmed anything.

Ball bearing and spring? near the filter area?

Gee, that sounds like it might be a check valve to prevent oil from flowing back to the sump,
You might just be starting your engine on dry bearings in future.

Best to check the parts manual to determine function just in case.

I installed it the way it came out so I don't think any harm was done I was just wondering what it was, my guess is it is probably a check valve of some sort as irvingj posted. I used the tractor yesterday and everything works as it should. I engaged my rear pto just to make sure it worked okay.

No, not a check valve, just a spring-loaded ball detent so one of your levers will "click" into the neutral position, giving a tactile feel. At least that's what I believe it is.

detent ball is a pretty common thing, used in cars, tractors, trucks, and all kinds of equipment for probably over a hundred years. good thing to understand. probably get a billion hits if you google it.

That's what I meant to say, all my levers feel the same. I believe that is what it is as well.

Glad it has worked out OK.
Only reason I suggested check valve was due to the location.
Ball and spring is usually 'dedent' mechanism but can also be a check valve device.

Ya I put it right back in after I took it out, I don't know about anyone else but when I see a ball bearing and a spring pop out of behind a bolt, It kind of surprises me and I just want to reinstall it as quick as I can..

You got lucky, one guy on another thread though he was taking out a drain plug but it was actually a pin that held a shift fork and as soon as he took it out it changed positions on him and couldn't replace it, he ended up splitting the entire tractor to line it back up.
