I don't like the idea. Maybe for a touch up and light use, but dull chain has to be grounded quite a bit and to achieve that you have to sharpen from the face of the tooth, not from the top. If you use it extensively, you will thin out the tooth, that can not be a good thing.

My college masters was on cutting tools for machining and in my never too humble opinion you can't cheat like this.

I actuly have one and find it does a good job. only kick back is one have to buy the chain that is made for the They sharpen from the top not the side. It cost around $70.00, that includes the chain, new bar and the sharpener.

The jig to slide on the tip is a clever idea. The special chain is double the price of a conventional chain.
This was demonstrated at the Lake States Logging Congress in Green Bay, WI last month, and watched a customer saw a log, then drag the tip of the running saw on the blacktop 4-5 times, then putting the jig on for sharpening. The booth man suggested an extra "grind" or two to recover from the severe asphalt/blacktop treatment. When done, the saw went through the log as a sharp chain. However, a lot of wear on the sharpened saw teeth was evident.

The salesman said they were not meant for replacement of conventional, but for the occasional homeowner or where cutting through metal or connecting with the ground were unavoidable hazards.

I'll stick to sharpening by hand. It is a learnable skill. IMO. :)

Not realy, a new chain is $30. A regular chain for my saw is $25, so theres not that much diff in price.

Whatever.
The salesman demo'ing the unit said twice the price...maybe there is a new bar that has to be purchased as well. Just going on what he said. And your $70 may include all that.

Let us know how you like it.

I don't let my saw blade chain get into the dirt, if I can possibly avoid it. I find it no problem to sharpen by hand. :)

Well so far i do like it. I also have the table sharpener to sharpen my other chains if i need to but have found this to b verry handy to have in the woods when i need a quick sharpen. Takes about 2 min and im done.

as a new product in 2010 i would expect low entry price on chain.

once they have sold it to mass market home owners in big box stores they simply start tacking on $5-$10 a year untill the special chain is twice a standard chain.

oh and i would expect chain life to be about half of what you normally get out of a standard chain.

The top sharpening method has been around for awhile. Some of the older sears saws (I think) and some others had the stones in the clutch cover.

This is definatally marketed toward the average homeowners (poulan and craftsman user) and NOT marketed toward the pros.

It is actually a good Idea for the average homeowner cause for them it is a PITA to have to take a saw somewhere to sharpen when they could do it themselves. And for the average user that only uses a saw a handful of times per year, this could be a great Idea.

Just not for me.

I agree, I have lost track of how many people I have taught how to sharpen over the years. It is not a difficult skill to learn, but I have sure run across quite a few who have trouble getting their brain around it untill they are shown just how easy it is:)
