Hiya,

Looking for a reasonably priced AR platform for my daughter. She has the 22lr S&W ar15-22 version of it and shoots it very well. She wants to move up to Service Rifle this spring, eventually shooting the 600 yard course however my H-Bar and CMP ARs are way too heavy for her, especially in offhand. The match director said they are allowing the M4 style carbines to shoot service rifle over the short course (200/300 yard) so I'm looking for opinions on the S&W Sport as they are on sale this week for $700 at the store I frequent. I realize it's a less featured model, for example no FA, resin rear sight (Planning of fitting an M3 handle with an A2 rear sight on it anyway) but mainly looking for how well it functions, trigger quality and how accurate it is out of the box.

This is what I'm looking at:
www.galleryofguns.com - Gun Genie - Davidson's most popular and powerful search engine to find and buy guns at galleryofguns.com

Thanks,
Tom

My son has the M&P15 Sport, I have the OR version. We are both very happy with them but then they are our first AR-15 type guns. I've never been much of a rifle shooter but these guns have changed my interest.

I don't know about the longer ranges, I have enough trouble at 100 yard with any firearm.

As ammo prices went up, I bought the M&P15-22 and I really like it.

I don't think you can go wrong at that price for the sport. I have heard nothing but positive comments from owners.

I have an M&P 15 MOE that I am very happy with.

I have the sport and love it... no problems, and more accurate than I can shoot. I must add that it is my first AR-15, so I can't really make a comparison with others.

If the H-Bar LOP is ok for her, would another upper with a light weight barrel work? She could have a longer sight radius that way.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. I do realize it's not the best platform for the 2/300 yard course but it's better to get her out there.

Bill,
LOP is one factor I went with the S&W sport as it has an telescope rear stock that she runs 1 or 2 notches short. I realize I'm giving up on the sight radius and brl length but finding a 20" AR is pretty hard now and I figure, in a couple years after she is taller, I can get a full sizes stock, a 20" barrel and screw them on pretty easily, besides I can use that to teach her to pull an AR apart and swap components.

If you can pick one up for$700 that would be steal down here in south La. This gun control panic has the shelves bare and no .22 lr ammo to be had. Scalpers bought out every store that stocked it and now are selling bricks for$100 plus. And fools are buying them as fast as they can find them. We had to put our sunday afternoon plink sessions till the panic is over. When you can find the SW 15-22 here they want anywhere from$1500 to $2500 depending on mods. Thank You Washington

Sounds like a plain. Maybe in a couple of years the whole AR thing will have calmed down, and parts will be easier to come by. $700 sounds like a cheap way to get her into DCM or High Power matches.

Good luck to both of you, Bill

I really like the build quality and the quality of components of any S&W AR I have handled (and I have handled quite a few).
Your may get one otherwise but the stock trigger on any one that I have handled has been much better than an average AR from any maker Colt included.

For 700 you can't go wrong.
